1875 $10 VF30 PCGS. The 1875 Liberty eagle is a notable rarity among U.S. gold. Its mintage of only 100 circulation strikes is the lowest production total for a gold issue in U.S. coinage, and it is the rarest date in the Liberty eagle series. Only 11 different examples are accounted for, and the present VF30 coin has not been seen at auction since our 1998 ANA Signature. At the time, the rarity of the 1875 was not fully appreciated, and this piece went unsold in that auction. A few other pieces offered during the same era sold for only the mid-five figure price range. It would be another decade before widespread recognition of the 1875 ten's rarity began to elevate auction prices, and today the issue is highly sought after. The second finest of the 11 known pieces -- offered in our recent October 2022 Long Beach Signature sale -- realized $1.02 million, eclipsing every standing auction record for this date. Prooflike fields and a green label PCGS holder likely contributed to that coin's success. Similarly, this piece, although more heavily worn, displays smooth and appealing surfaces and is also housed in a green label holder.

A few small marks serve as pedigree markers, but this piece is generally problem free with pleasing detail for the grade. WE in GOD WE TRUST is obscured by wear, but the heaviest of Liberty's hair curls and some star centrils remain visible. Deep honey-gold patina adorns each side. Eye appeal is pleasing. Population: 1 in 30, 9 finer (10/22).

1895-O $1 MS65 PCGS. CAC. Recovering from the financial panic of 1893 stayed a high priority for the U.S. throughout 1895. Congress had repealed the Sherman Silver Purchase Act in an attempt to bolster gold prices and aid in economic growth, although the 1894 production of silver dollars interestingly increased slightly over 1893. Moreover, some 9.6 million Morgans were available in New Orleans vaults as of July 1895. The decision was made to order the branch mints to strike 850,000 additional Morgan dollars in 1895, with 450,000 in New Orleans and 400,000 in San Francisco. The 1895 mintage of Morgan silver dollars became the smallest in the series.
The Pittman Act was passed on April 22, 1918 and authorized the melting of up to 350 million U.S. silver dollars to be sold to Britain for one dollar per ounce of bullion. Eventually just over 270 million silver dollars were melted under the Act, and with no date or mint data recorded during melting, an estimate of melted 1895-O pieces is open for debate. The survival rate for this issue is inordinately low, suggesting that hundreds of thousands may have been melted. Furthermore, the issue is one of the few that has not been found in Treasury bags paid out in the 1960s, nor have pieces from the issue surfaced in significant quantities within any hoards.
The Gem Morgan Dollar offered here is one of the finest known examples from the 1895-O issue. The strike is exceptional for a Southern Mint Morgan, and the undisturbed patina and luster attest to its original and well-preserved state. Slate-gray surfaces on luminous satin reveal a light undertone of emerald that flashes iridescent hues of sky-blue and salmon, with emphasis on the periphery. A colorful cartwheel effect is produced upon rotation that masks what few minor nicks exist, none of which are material. The combination of these attributes yields a quality Morgan dollar from an issue that is seldom seen, and a quality that has been endorsed by CAC. In addition, the two services s (PCGS# 7236)

1837 American Silver 25 Cents, Low-50, HT-74, W-NY-480-80j, R.8, MS62 NGC. Feuchtwanger's composition (German silver), plain edge. Ex: Bushnell-Low-Ryder-Raymond-Boyd-Ford. The Schuman plate coin (page 89) in The True Hard Times Tokens. The Bowers plate coin in A Guide Book of Hard Times Tokens (page 204). The Rulau plate coin in Standard Catalog of United States Tokens 1700-1900 (page 120). Charles Ira Bushnell described this piece in his 1858 study, An Arrangement of the Tradesmen's Cards, Political Tokens and Election Medals. The phrase "American Silver Composition" was Dr. Feuchtwanger's name for his alloy that is often called "German Silver."

The present offering is the fifth auction appearance of the legendary Low-50 token. This example was previously offered in 1882 and 2004, while the other example appeared in 1990 and 2020. For several decades, the variety was believed to be unique since its discovery in 1858. When we brought the Partrick collection to auction in 2020, we recorded the provenance of that example originating with Virgil M. Brand. However, John J. Ford once claimed that he found that piece and sold it to Mr. Zeddies in the 1960s. Ford's claim is unverifiable today.

Lyman Low, who purchased the present example from the Bushnell auction as agent for Hillyer Ryder, mistakenly included this token among his "Bushnell Fantasy" tokens, although it is now considered an emission of 1837. Analysis of the present piece indicates that it is a true Hard Times Token as Dr. Schuman reports:

"Wayte Raymond, John Ford, George Fuld, Dave Bowers, Russ Rulau, and the author (RAS) all feel that this piece is Dr. Feuchtwanger's Neutral Specie 25 cent pattern for his American Silver composition, a phrase used by Dr. Feuchtwanger on his merchant tokens a 2 Cortland St. and 377 Broadway. The eagle and shield with arrows and leaves are quite typical of and consistent with the 1837 time frame and are r (PCGS# 77081)

1895 $1 PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS. According to Mint records, an average-size proof mintage of 880 Morgan dollars was accomplished in 1895, to accompany a small business-strike production of 12,000 pieces. Of course, as most numismatists know, not one business-strike example has ever been reliably reported in any collection, essentially making the 1895 a proof-only issue. The fate of the missing business-strikes is one of the enduring mysteries of American coinage, with some researchers believing the coins were never struck and the mintage figures represent a bookkeeping error. Other students of the series believe the coins were struck, but held in government storage and later melted, probably under the provisions of the Pittman Act in 1918. The only certainty is that the small proof mintage has been left to satisfy the intense collector demand for this issue in one of the most widely collected series in all of American numismatics.

The proofs began appearing at auction almost immediately and catalogers recognized the elusive nature of the dollar at an early date. F. Merritt Alden, a collector from Springfield, Massachusetts, purchased at least one silver proof set from the Mint every year from 1859 through 1895. When his collection was sold by the Chapman brothers in April of 1896, lot 161 featured his 1895 silver proof set, "1895 Brilliant proof set. Dollar rare. 6 pieces." The set realized $4, more than twice the face value of the coins, which had only been issued the previous year. Recent sales of the 1895 proof Morgan dollar include the PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS specimen in lot 3373 of the FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2012), that realized $126,500.

The present coin is a delightful Premium Gem proof, with sharply detailed, richly frosted design elements that create intense cameo contrast with the deeply mirrored fields. The impeccably preserved surfaces show no mentionable distractions. Overall eye appeal is terrific. Population: 10 in 66 (4 in 66+) Deep Cameo, 8 finer (4/22).< (PCGS# 97330)

1895 $1 PR67 NGC. The "King of Morgan Dollars" is more famous than it is absolutely rare. With a mintage of 880 coins, it is just about as plentiful as most other proof issues in the series. However, its existence only in proof format with no circulation strikes known makes it uniquely significant for collectors of this series. Even low-grade, problem, and worn examples bring strong premiums at auction, while high-end pieces such as this Superb Gem are the subjects of press releases and auction headlines.

Mint records indicate a production of 12,000 circulation-strike Morgan dollars at Philadelphia in 1895, although no such coins have ever been identified. Contemporary numismatists, including the Chapman brothers, believed the 1895 dollar to only exist in proof format, even as early as 1896. This has led some researchers to suggest that the 12,000 circulation strikes reported were never actually struck, but that the Mint record was an accounting error. A more recent theory is that 12,000 circulation strikes may well have been produced, but were never released and were later destroyed in the 1918 to 1920 Pittman Act melts. Either of these theories provide for both the lack of known circulation strikes today, as well as the contemporary perception that such coins did not exist.

This Superb Gem proof showcases tremendous visual appeal, built on deeply reflective fields cast in old-time violet, gold, blue-green, and lilac toning, which forms concentric bands around each side. The strike is sharp, and neither side exhibits a single notable mark beneath the patina. A stunning example of this coveted and storied rarity. Census: 12 in 67 (1 in 67+), 4 finer (7/25). 1895 $1 PR64+ Cameo PCGS. CAC. An average-size mintage of 880 proof Morgan dollars was accomplished at the Philadelphia Mint in 1895, with the coins delivered in four batches throughout the year. Deliveries of 290 examples in March, 180 specimens in May, 90 pieces in September, and 320 coins in December are recorded, following a common pattern of collector demand, with most orders coming at the beginning and end of the year. Records show a tiny business-strike mintage of 12,000 examples was also produced, but no regular-issue coins have ever turned up in any collection.

The fate of the 1895 business-strike Morgan dollars is one of the greatest mysteries in American numismatics. Prominent researchers, from Q. David Bowers to Roger W. Burdette, have offered ingenious theories about the missing coins, but conclusive evidence remains elusive. One theory suggests the circulation-strike coins were never actually struck and the mintage figures represent some kind of clerical error in the records. Another theory indicates the coins were struck, but all were subsequently melted, perhaps under the provisions of the Pittman Act in 1918. Whatever the truth may be, no business-strike 1895 Morgan dollars are known to collectors today, leaving the small supply of proofs alone to satisfy collector demand. Accordingly, the 1895 Morgan dollar is the rarest, most sought-after issue in this incredibly popular series.

The elusive nature of the 1895 issue was recognized almost immediately and the proofs began selling at auction as early as lot 161 of the F. Merritt Alden Collection (S.H. & H. Chapman, 4/1896), "1895 Brilliant proof set. Dollar rare." The lot realized $4.40, a strong price at the time, for coins issued only the year before. Recent sales include the PR64 Cameo PCGS example that realized $81,000 in our FUN Signature last January..

The genuine coins possess a distinct authenticating die marker -- a small reverse die chip at the top left of the leftmost vertical stripe.

The production total for the issue was only 12,000 coins. The Mint was at work complying with the Bland-Allison Act of 1878, requiring the production of millions of Morgan silver dollars. In 1878, the San Francisco Mint produced just shy of 10 million of the new silver dollar coins. The previous year, that same facility had produced nearly 6 million 1877-S Seated Liberty halves. The production of quarters is fairly similar: From 9 million 1877-S quarters, the 1878-S Seated quarters only saw a production of only 140,000 coins.

The 1878-S half dollar issue was well-produced with sharp no signs of die clashing, die breaks, or other issues. The Mint State survivors generally display at least partially prooflike surfaces, as is the case with this pleasing MS61 example, with the reverse in particular exhibiting areas of reflectivity. The obverse displays light-gray surfaces with subtle hints of rose. Toning on the reverse includes splashes of green-gray color. Minor hairlines are present but pose no distraction, while the strike is razor-sharp throughout both sides. The coin is housed in a green label holder. PCGS has assigned the MS61 grade to only one other example, with a mere 10 pieces finer (9/23). This example is listed within the top dozen 1878-S half dollars known according to Bill Bugert's Register of 1878-S Liberty Seated Half Dollars.
