1855 $10 MS64 PCGS.
(PCGS# 8616)
Auction 1121
| Lot: 4116 | Jan 11, 2009
Sold For:
$27,600.00
1855 $10 MS64 PCGS.
The 1855 is a remarkably scarce coin in mint condition for an issue with a mintage of 121,701 pieces. The last coin we offered in Uncirculated (an MS63) was in February 2001. Let's look at that a bit further: above MS61, we have only offered for sale at public auction four 1855 tens in the past five years. This is a very impressive coin that has bright, shimmering mint luster and the strike is strong on each side. A couple of minute ticks are all that keep this from the Gem category, and the coloration is a rich orange-gold. An opportunity for the astute gold specialist. Population: 3 in 64, 0 finer (8/05).

Auction 384
| Lot: 4772 | Sep 24, 2005
Sold For:
$23,000.00
1855-0 $10 MS 61 PCGS.
Normal Date. Sharply struck and quite attractive with undisturbed satiny luster below a touch of pale orange-gold color. The surfaces are almost entirely free of marks, and a few faint hairlines can be seen with magnification. Easily the finest 1855-O eagle we have seen and quite possibly the finest known. One of the most important eagles in this superb collection.
The 1855-O eagle is a rare, underrated issue. There are fewer than 100 pieces known from the original mintage of 18,000 and most survivors are in the Very Fine to Extremely Fine grade range. Approximately a dozen AU pieces are known and just a small number of these grade better than AU 50. There are currently two MS 61 1855-O eagles listed in the PCGS
Population Report.
We have never seen the other and are not certain if this listing does not represent a resubmission of the Acadiana collection specimen. If this is the case, then the presently offered coin is unique in Mint State.
From the Ronald W. Brown Acadiana Collection; obtained via private treaty from Doug Winter in 1996; earlier Ex: RARCOA; Martin Paul; Ed Milas Collection; and said to earlier be from the Farouk collection.

1855 $10 MS 63 NGC.
The significance of the 1855 eagle lies in its status as a No Motto type coin, for it is one of the few issues of this earlier design that can occasionally be found in strict Uncirculated condition. This is a bright, satiny example that shows only scattered blemishes and has excellent sharpness on all details save for the obverse stars. Population: 1 in 63, 1 finer (5/00).

1855 $10 MS62 PCGS.
Lovely, pristine, satiny orange-gold surfaces on this desirable early half eagle. While this issue is popular for type sets and occasionally found in AU, it is a rare coin in full Mint State. This coin is exceptionally well struck, with most of the star centrils full, and virtually complete detail on the eagle. Examination under magnification reveals a light scrape through ER in AMERICA and a scrape in the left reverse field, along with normal, grade-consistent small ticks. Nonetheless exceptionally bold, problem-free, and desirable. Population: 3 in 62, 5 finer (12/05).

1855 $10 MS62 PCGS.
No Motto eagles are readily obtained in circulated grades, but pieces with full mint luster are rare, and when found, are usually either the 1847 or 1861 issues. The 1855 has a mintage of only 121,701 pieces, and although XF and AU examples are plentiful, PCGS has certified just 15 examples in MS60 and higher grades. The present lustrous representative also benefits from a sharp strike, and the sole identifying mark is a short scrape in the field beneath the beak. Population: 5 in 62, 5 finer (4/06).

1855-0 $10 AU 55 PCGS.
In nearly any other collection, this would be the 1855-O eagle chosen to represent the issue. In the Acadiana Collection, this coin is, incredibly, only the second best 1855-O eagle. This piece is characterized by its superb, rich, original orange-gold color that was probably the result of having been kept in a paper coin envelope for thirty-plus years. The surfaces are very lustrous and vibrant. A number of small marks can be seen with the most readily visible of these positioned just past star 13. A Condition Census coin with a great pedigree.
Repunched date variety with all four digits doubled to the right. This variety is considerably scarcer than the normal date.
From the Ronald W. Brown Acadiana Collection; Ex: Warren Miller Collection (Heritage, 10/95), lot 6297, where it realized $7150; Norweb II (Bowers and Merena, 3/88), lot 2171; obtained by Mrs. Norweb from William Donner in October, 1955.

Ex: Bass. A sharp example of this rare date No Motto eagle. Just 9,000 pieces were struck, and the issue is much more difficult to find than the introductory 1854-S. Glowing luster is extensive for the grade, and the only relevant mark is located beneath the branch stem. Population: 6 in 50, 6 finer (11/06).

As nice as this date can readily be found, with NGC showing none graded finer of this scarce issue. Of the 18,000 struck most entered circulation and very few were saved in high grades. This coin shows a few scattered handling marks but no deep or distracting nicks which are so often found on lower grade coins. The strike is sharp throughout, and the only identifying item seen is a small planchet void at the top of the A in STATES. One for the date specialist who demands eye appeal as well as excellent condition. Population: 14 in 58, 0 finer (1/05).

1855-0 AU 55 PCGS.
A very scarce O-mint No Motto ten with a mintage of only 18,000 pieces. But the mintage does not begin to convey the true rarity of this issue. There are very few '55-O tens known in any grade, and even accurately graded XF pieces are quite rare. Only one coin is believed to exist today in mint state, a PCGS MS 61, and this is the second finest example certified. It is also listed as the second finest known in Doug Winter's condition census. Unlike most '55-O eagles, the centers of this piece show only slight softness of strike. The peripheral stars are irregularly detailed though. The surfaces retain much of the original mint luster and overall the coin displays a rich golden-orange color. The most distinctive marks that identify this piece are a couple of small nicks past star 13. As mentioned in the Norweb catalog, the numerals in the date all show slight repunching on their right sides.

1855 MS 62 PCGS.
The 1855 is one of the few No Motto issues that can occasionally be found in strict uncirculated condition. It is not commonly located in mint state, but the few pieces that do exist are very popular with collectors. According to the July data from PCGS, this is the only MS 62 certified by PCGS and it is tied as the finest certified with one NGC coin. This is a highly lustrous coin that shows slight reddish-coppery color over the bright yellow-gold surfaces. Moderately abraded, as one would expect from a coin in this grade, the most obvious mark is a long one in the field in front of the forehead of Liberty. Two other, smaller ones, are located in front of and below Liberty's eye.

1855-O $10 AU 58 NGC.
Fewer than 100 pieces are known today of the 1855-O in all grades from the mintage of 18,000. Most of the known survivors are in the VF-XF grade range. Only a dozen or so pieces are believed extant in AU condition, and most of those are marginal AU 50 or slightly better. The surfaces on this coin retain most of the original mint luster and at first glance it closely resembles an Uncirculated piece. The striking details are above average for the issue with some weakness seen on several of the peripheral stars but strong definition in the centers. Semi-prooflike, as usual, the surfaces are lightly abraded overall with the only mentionable defects being a couple of marks on the portrait of Liberty.
