1880 $4 Coiled Hair Four Dollar Stella, Judd-1662, Pollock-1862, High R.7, PR66 NGC.
George Morgan's Coiled Hair design. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. Deeply mirrored fields on both sides serve to highlight the devices of this lovely Gem Cameo proof. Both sides have brilliant light gray color with a dash of pale gold toning on parts of the obverse. Portions of the hair details are weakly defined due to striae from the planchet preparation process. Affected are a few strands of hair above the ear, as well as some of the braids on the coil of hair at the top of the obverse.
Like the other aluminum stellas, it is thought that just four to six examples are known. Among these are the set of four from the Jeff Browning Collection and the Garrett Collection set of four that was bought by Harry Bass. Three of the four Garrett pieces were retained by the Bass Foundation and are now on display at the ANA in Colorado Springs, CO. The fourth coin from that set was sold in the first Bass Collection auction by Bowers and Merena, thus the set is no longer intact. Two examples were offered in the King Farouk sale (Sotheby's, 2/1954), but neither is traceable today. Other appearances include an example in the 1979 ANA Sale by New England Rare Coin Auctions, an example in RARCOA's May 1969 sale that cannot be identified today, and one sold as part of a four piece set (three aluminum and one copper) by Kagin's in their sale of May 1978. The specimen we are offering is the Kagin's May 1978 coin.
Ex: Kagin's (50th Anniversary Sale, 5/1978), lot 1061.

1879 $4 Coiled Hair Four Dollar, Judd-1639, Pollock-1839, Low R.7, PR65 Brown PCGS.
George Morgan's famous Coiled Hair design for the proposed four dollar gold piece, or stella, as the denomination was known ("stella," of course, being the Latin word for "star" which is the design motif on the reverse). Struck in copper with a reeded edge. In gold, Coiled Hair stellas are prohibitively rare and expensive. They stand as one of the most avidly sought after and closely held of all American coins. Oftentimes many years pass between offerings. Only 10-15 pieces were struck in gold in each year.
When John Kasson proposed the production of four dollar gold pieces, it was for the purpose of an international coin that could easily be converted into denominations of major European countries. Sets were produced in goloid, copper, aluminum, and white metal. The wide variety of metals these coins were struck in reflects the seriousness of Kasson's proposed coinage. Flowing Hair and Coiled Hair examples were also struck in 1880 but, of course, the four dollar gold piece soon passed from the attention of Mint and government officials. The off-metal patterns are somewhat more available and cost only a fraction of the price of the gold strikings. However, their rarity is comparable to the gold strikings with only a dozen or so copper patterns known today and an additional five copper pieces that have been gilt. This is one of the finest copper strikings known. It is a lovely Gem that shows considerable mint red around the devices and in the reverse fields. Otherwise, the devices display bright blue and brown patina. The fields are deeply reflective, and the only "defects" worthy of mention are a few tiny flecks of carbon on each side (magnification is required).

1915 50C Panama-Pacific Half Dollar, Judd-1961 (previously Judd-1791), Pollock-2029, R.7, PR64 NGC.
The adopted obverse and reverse of the Panama-Pacific half dollar without the S mintmark on the obverse. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. This extremely rare pattern was struck before the S mintmark was added to the obverse die. Examples are known in silver, copper, and gold, and we have a complete, three-piece that has been intact for decades. This is one of fewer than four pieces that are believed extant today in silver. In this coin's last auction appearance in 1980, the cataloger noted a curious striking anomaly: "The repeated blows of the die has created a slight overlapping of the obverse wire rim at 1 o'clock." The surfaces are exceptionally bright and untoned in the centers with deeper golden-brown and blue toning around margins. The devices show pinpoint striking definition and, in addition to the above mentioned striking anomaly on the rim, there is also evidence of a second strike on the reverse on the left (facing) edge of the eagle's wing. A very important and very rare opportunity to acquire this die trial in the metal of issue.
Ex: 1979 ANA Sale (New England, 7/79), lot 1364, where it realized an impressive $15,000.

1868 Sixteen-Piece Aluminum Proof Set, one of each denomination from the cent through double eagle.
All are struck from regular dies in aluminum and are plain edge on the cent through nickel and reeded edge thereafter. They were originally housed and are accompanied by a morocco presentation case lined in purple velvet and fashioned like a book in which both sides of the coins could be viewed under glass. The cover is gold tooled leather with brass clasps and hinges, and survives with only slight fraying at the edges.
Aluminum was considered a semi-precious metal in the years following the Civil War and was valued at approximately the same level per troy ounce as silver, although its lighter weight would have caused a significant reduction in intrinsic value on current silver issues. In referring to these pattern sets, Dr. Judd wrote that they were produced "to demonstrate how excellently aluminum coined in any die, (and) several proof sets were struck in aluminum from the regular dies of the 16 denominations of the year and were presented to Dr. Linderman, Director of the Mint." Linderman's original instructions were for the striking of two sets, one to be sent to the Bank of England and the second to France. Apparently his directions received prompt attention because two days later he wrote, "As you can furnish impressions of our coins in Aluminum so readily, I desire that you will make four sets instead of two."
Several sources have listed the number of sets issued at five, a number that would leave three in this country. The Garrett Collection set, which we believe to be the set offered here, was sold in November, 1979 and included a leather case of issue. Another is rumored to have been owned by Abe Kosoff or Abner Kreisberg in the 1950s, and a third was passed down in the family of the Secretary of the Treasury in 1868, Hugh McCullough, only in the past few years being sold to a numismatist from Missouri. Individually, the set consists of:

1916 50C Walking Liberty Half Dollar, Judd-1991, Formerly Judd-1798, Pollock-2056, High R.7, PR63 PCGS.
Struck in the matte proof format favored by mint officials of the era, this silver-gray specimen is unmarked and best identified by a small number of short mint-made lintmarks on Liberty's skirt. Fully struck, Liberty's head and branch hand have definition uncommon to the eventual business strikes of the modified type. Struck in silver with a reeded edge.
Judd-1991 is believed to be the earliest among the six varieties of pattern 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollars. The two major devices are very similar to their adopted counterparts but are somewhat smaller in scale. HALF DOLLAR is on the upper reverse instead of the reverse exergue, and E PLURIBUS UNUM is on the lower reverse instead of its usual position above the pine sapling. Unlike Judd-1992, LIBERTY is not fixed above the motto, but is distributed across the upper obverse border. No AW monogram is present.
Only four examples of Judd-1991 are presently known. These are enumerated by Saul Teichman at the website uspatterns.com. The pedigrees of the known pieces are:
1. Smithsonian.
2. Farouk?, William Mitkoff, sold to Pryor on 4/74, James Bennett Pryor Collection (Bowers and Merena, 1/96), lot 330, as PCGS PR61.
3. Farouk Palace Sale (Sotheby & Co., 2/54), part of lot 2028; Superior (10/90), lot 1889; Baltimore '93 Auction (Superior, 7/93), lot 470, as PCGS PR63.
4. Robert Marks Collection, Part II (American Auction Association, 11/72), lot 1081; Austin Collection (Bowers and Ruddy, 6/74), lot 1113; Morris Evans Collection (Bowers and Merena, 8/98), lot 2101; Americana Sale (Stack's, 1/04), lot 3552. The present piece.
Since the Smithsonian example is presumably permanently impounded, only three pieces are available to collectors, a population identical to the famous 1913 Liberty Nickel. A remarkable opportunity that has dual appeal to both pattern specialists and Walking Liberty H
