Examples of the 1867-S Seated quarter are usually found in circulated grades. These pieces were popular and well-used in West Coast commerce in the years immediately after the end of the Civil War. Mint State examples are elusive but have "creamy luster" when found, according to series expert Larry Briggs. BR BR In the January 2008 I Coin Dealer Newsletter Monthly Supplement, /B /I Briggs elaborates on the issue: BR BR blockquote "Very scarce to rare in all grades. Rarity just now starting to be recognized -- usually found in low grades AG-F. Because of usually seen uneven strike and wear, coins appearance is terrible. VF-XF's are very scarce; AU's are scarce and Mint State coins are very rare. Only one die known." /blockquote BR BR The present near-Gem PCGS example is in the Condition Census.
