1872 5C Fletcher-6, JD-1, R.2, PR63 Cameo PCGS.
In
United States Proof Coins, Volume II: Nickel,
John Dannreuther estimates the 1872 proof mintage at 1,100 pieces, with more than 900 coins surviving. About two thirds of those pieces are JD-1, using Reverse B from 1871 with a broken S in CENTS.

1875 5C JD-2, R.3, PR64 Cameo PCGS.
JD-2 is the most plentiful of the three 1875 proof die marriages, although it represents less than half of the total population for this date. This piece is deeply mirrored and brilliant, with pleasing cameo contrast and sharp devices.

1872 5C Fletcher-6, JD-2, R.2, PR64 Cameo PCGS.
Dannreuther suggests about one third of surviving 1872 proof Shield nickels are JD-2. This variety uses a new reverse without the broken S in CENTS, though it shares its obverse die with the JD-1 marriage. This piece is well-mirrored and tinged with just a kiss of light golden color.

1867 5C No Rays, JD-2, High R.2, PR64 Cameo PCGS.
The JD-1 proof die pair uses the pattern reverse and is very rare, while the JD-2 dies represent the rest of the 1867 No Rays proof Shield nickel production. John Dannreuther estimates a JD-2 survivorship of 550+ pieces, while Bernus Turner's suggested survivorship of 600 pieces is in agreement. Both varieties use the common obverse. This Choice Cameo JD-2 coin boasts exceptional eye appeal for the grade, with pleasing contrast.

1875 5C JD-1, High R.3, PR65 Cameo PCGS.
Date placement is the chief diagnostic of JD-1 versus the other two proof die marriages. About 30% of the 1875 proofs are this marriage. It is the only use of both dies. This Gem Cameo displays attractive mirroring and just the faintest touch of light golden color that is nearly brilliant.

1874 5C JD-3, R.5, PR65 Cameo PCGS.
Date placement is the chief diagnostic of JD-3 to differentiate it from the other two proof die pairs. JD-3 is also the rarest of the 1874 proof varieties, with only 5% of the coinage thought to come from these dies. The R.5 rating is certainly an unusual thing for the proof Shield nickel series.

1877 5C JD-1, R.2, PR65 Cameo PCGS.
Two die pairs are recorded for the 1877 nickel, which is only known in proof format. The
Guide Book
provides a mintage of 900 coins for this issue, though John Dannreuther, in
United States Proof Coins, Volume II: Nickel,
suggests a higher production total of 1,100 pieces. Regardless, the 1877 is the key date No Rays proof, ignoring the 1867 Pattern Reverse issue. This champagne-tinged Gem Cameo displays appreciable contrast and a bold strike. The JD-1 variety represents about three fourths of this issue.

1867 5C Rays, JD-3, R.7, PR65+ Cameo PCGS.
The Rays were removed from the reverse of the Shield nickel partway through the year in 1867 to improve striking quality and increase the life of the dies. A small number of proofs was struck using the old reverse, and later, restrikes using the Rays Reverse were struck. John Dannreuther's
United States Proof Coins, Volume II: Nickel
cites significant research by Bernus Turner on this issue. Original Rays proofs were struck from the JD-1 dies, on at least two occasions. JD-2, -3, and -4 varieties represent subsequent restrikes with deteriorating die states of the shared reverse die, and unique obverse dies. These die states provide clear sequencing with the marriages.
In total, Dannreuther estimates a coinage of With Rays proofs of about 60 pieces, influenced by the number of surviving examples of the various varieties. For the JD-1 originals, Dannreuther suggests a survivorship of 23 to 25 coins; Turner divides these by striking event, suggesting no more than 20 are from the "group 2" batch and the remaining five from the "group 1" batch. For JD-2, Dannreuther estimates a survivorship of 13 to 15 pieces, in agreement with Turner. For JD-3, Dannreuther's estimate is six to 10 survivors, while Turner suggests six to seven. The latest variety, JD-4, both scholars suggest a survivorship of 10 coins.
These varieties counts and striking period estimates closely align with prior research by Dannreuther, save for the expansion of three known obverse dies to four. The present Gem Cameo coin is struck from the JD-3 dies as enumerated today by
United States Proof Coins.
The date is low, with 1 centered between dentils. There is no lump on the "ball ornament" at the bottom of the shield. Heavy die polish lines appear in the lower part of the shield on the obverse, the middle ray in the three below the second T of STATES is weak, and the dentilation around the reverse from 3-5 o'clock is noticeably attenuated.
