1891-CC $1 MS68 Prooflike PCGS.
In the 1997 catalog of the Eliasberg Collection, Dave Bowers suggested that this amazing dollar might be a presentation piece, or struck as a Proof. He built his case by comparing the appearance of this coin to a written report of other 1891-CC Dollars that were examined at the Smithsonian, coins of lesser quality that were determined to be Proofs, according to Mendel L. Peterson who was a curator for that institution. Based on the comparison, Mr. Bowers suggested that this Eliasberg coin may be in a class of its own.
There is no question that this is a special coin. The depth of the mirrored fields is remarkable, possibly deserving the designation of DMPL, although the slightest toning on the reverse masks this depth to a certain degree. We do not feel that it qualifies as a presentation piece or a Proof, however. Some design elements, especially the stars, letters, and numerals, fall just short of the crispness that might be expected. The same is true at the junction of fields and border dentils. A few areas on the reverse lack the mirrored appearance that they should have for a Proof piece. The obverse has a faint die crack through the stars to the right, suggesting that this is not a perfectly new die.
The surfaces are virtually perfect with excellent cameo contrast between the devices and the fields, especially on the obverse. There is no evidence of toning on the obverse, and only the slightest champagne color on the reverse. Not only is this the single finest certified prooflike example of the date to be examined by PCGS, it is also the finest example from a numerical standpoint. The top examples graded by PCGS are MS67, MS68 PL, MS66 PL, and MS65 DMPL. This population data serves to reinforce the idea that this coin really is in a class of its own.

1893-O $1 MS66 Prooflike PCGS.
The 1893-O has the lowest mintage of all New Orleans dollars with only 300,000 pieces struck. After all the circulated, heavily bagmarked, and weakly struck coins are factored out of the number that remain, one realizes that this is a very challenging issue from the 1890s. Additionally, very few true prooflikes are known. This is a nicely mirrored coin that has even reflectivity on each side. The devices are also frosted with no obvious abrasions. Warm golden-brown toning turns slightly deeper in hue around the margins with a thin ring of blue just over the denticles. Population: 1 in 66, 0 finer (10/03).
