With twelve (of thirteen) engraved plates, most folding, and four engraved in-text illustrations. Contemporary full polished calf with the gilt arms of Madame de Maintenon on the covers, a gilt-decorated spine, and a red morocco spine label. Marbled endpapers. Housed in a custom clamshell box. A few repaired tears to some plates. Minor, mostly marginal foxing. Tender joints, but holding firm. A wonderful copy, with a distinguished provenance. An important work, containing the earliest detailed plans of St. Sophia and other monuments in Constantinople.
This copy includes a two-page Autograph Letter Signed by Madame Maintenon to the Duke of Noailles.
