As the country approached its centennial year celebration in 1876, the production of mid-level silver coinage experienced noticeable increases at the San Francisco branch mint. Dimes, quarters and half dollars were plentiful, and over 1.5 million double eagles were struck in the West. Surprisingly, however, the production of 1876 quarter eagles, half eagles and eagles all fell below 5,000 pieces, with the 1876-S half eagle reporting an anemic 4,000 pieces. The centennial passed with little attention given to half eagles from West Coast collectors, and with typical circulation in the area, the issue is most often seen between VF and XF.
This Choice AU half eagle is a very attractive 1876-S with lively orange-gold surfaces that retain ample luster in shades of lavender and powder-lilac. The well-struck devices show only slightly soft on the centers, with light blending on the high points. The cartwheel effect produced is dazzling and colorful, yielding exceptional eye appeal. A tiny nick on Liberty's bun accounts for the only notable mark. Light clashing is seen on the obverse and heavier, typical clashing appears on the reverse (as struck). We have handled only seven half eagles this fine since 1994; it is a conditionally rare issue with only three examples graded in Mint State at PCGS (4/26). This important piece deserves strong consideration from gold and branch mint specialists.
