"GREAT BRITAIN. England. Charles I. (King, 1625-1649). (1633-38) ND-(portcullis) AR Crown. NGC MS63. Tower (London) mint. 29.92gm. King on horseback riding to left; wearing crown and holding sword upright / Plumes surmount ornate quartered oval shield of arms. SCBC-2759. Superb choice mint state with a lovely cabinet patina and an excellent provenance. One of the finest surviving examples of the type. In our opinion of significantly finer technical grade than the Geoffrey Cope example of SCBC-2758 (realized CHF 70,000 hammer or approximately $94,500 with the buyer's premium on 8 May 2024); that piece had a stronger strike but hairlined fields. Please use this link to verify the NGC certification number a href=""https://www.ngccoin.com/certlookup/6439498-009/61/"" 6439498009 /a The collection of Mark and Lottie Salton encompassed thousands of gold and silver coins of Ancient Greece, the Roman Empire, and Europe from the medieval period to the 20th century. Mark Salton was the son of renowned dealer Felix Schlessinger and the nephew of Leo Hamburger in Frankfurt, then the most prominent coin dealer in Germany. The Saltons began accumulating their collection prior to the Second World War; their family and business was devastated by the persecution of the Jewish community in Germany and they fled their homeland to eventually resettle in the United States. Once they arrived they remade their lives and began again to build the collection. As a collector and dealer himself later in life, Mark and Lottie had built an astonishing collection that surprised many of their contemporary numismatic experts when their estate and the collection was brought to the current market in a series of high profile auctions in 2022. It presented to collectors of the 21st century a remarkable collection in terms of size, quality and numismatic importance. Their collections are now accessible to present day collectors, who have an opportunity to share in this rich and storied collection and to learn from the Saltons' connoisseurship and appreciation of all things numismatic." ...

Substantial luster remains on this AU58 1876-CC, which features only the slightest high point wear and partially reflective fields that retain subtle contrast with the raised devices. Medium sun-gold color graces the well-struck surfaces, with full stars and only slight weakness near the bun and upper hair strands, as often found. A group of light abrasions are located to the right of Liberty's neck and scattered faint hairlines join a few light marks when viewed under a loupe. The 1876-CC is the lowest-mintage Carson City half eagle, and the major grading services have awarded Mint State grades on only a handful of occasions. The Carson City half eagle collector interested in acquiring a pleasing near-Mint example should give this coin careful consideration. The population remains virtually unchanged over the past 15+ years. NGC Census: 8 in 58, 3 finer (3/25). BR I Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2007), lot 3561. /B /I ...
