1826 1C --Flip Over Double Strike in Collar--VG10 PCGS.
N-5, High R.2. Rim break (as struck) above star 6 only. Dark purple-brown patina. Although this Cent is well-worn, it still displays strong evidence of a spectacular mint error. Liberty's outline and RT from her coronet are visible within the wreath. The left side of the obverse has incused stars from the initial strike, which presumably was a brockage. The curious depressions on Liberty's profile are also mint-made from the double strike. The date has faint pinscratches, and the obverse field has a few trivial contact marks.

1976 $1 error Type Two Eisenhower Dollar--Flipover Double Strike--AU58 PCGS.
The initial strike was normal, but the piece did not fully eject from the dies. It did, however, flip over, and was struck a second time without an intervening planchet. The upper outline of Ike's head from the first strike is plainly visible south and west of the Liberty Bell on the reverse. The moon/bell design from the initial strike is fully outlined on the obverse, most clearly below Ike's chin. All of E PLURIBUS UNUM is legible (although faint) below the L in LIBERTY.

1999-P SBA$ error Susan B. Anthony Dollar--Flipover Double Strike, Second Strike 60% Off Center--MS64 PCGS.
After the first strike, this fascinating piece failed to fully eject from the die chamber. It did, however, manage to flip over between strikes. It was struck a second time, 60% off center past 1 o'clock relative to the obverse of the first strike. A newly fed blank intervened between this coin and the reverse die for the second strike. This off center flipover double strike of an obsolete design would be a highlight of any error collection.

1874-S $20 MS61 NGC.
The 1874-S is one of the more available San Francisco Type Two Double Eagles, but it is far scarcer in high grades than the 1875-S and 1876-S. This is an issue that is usually seen with a poor strike and many show very soft detail on the hair of Liberty. Poor eye appeal also plagues the 1874-S and most Uncirculated pieces have excessively abraded surfaces.
This is an interesting piece, if for no other reason than because of the mismatched obverse and reverse. The obverse shows the numerous small abrasions that one would expect from a coin in this grade, and yes, it does not rate very high in the eye appeal department. However, flip it over and the reverse is bright, flashy, and semi-prooflike. Graded on its own, the reverse would probably rate at least two and perhaps three points higher than the obverse. Well struck throughout with rich orange-gold coloration.
There are 200 or so pieces known in Mint State with close to 90% of these in the MS60-61 range. As with so many issues of this type, the 1874-S is very rare in properly graded MS62 and examples are extremely rare above this. The best we have auctioned was the NGC MS63 in the 1998 ANA Sale that realized $18,975.

(1906) 1C Error Cent--Double Struck, Flip Over in Collar--Fine15 NGC.
Quite a spectacular error. The reverse is faintly impressed on the obverse with the bottom of the wreath in the exergual area. Similarly, the 06 of the date can just barely be seen over and below the bottom of the wreath on the reverse. Otherwise, an average circulated coin that makes one wonder how this piece could have circulated as long as it did.

1871-CC $20 AU58 NGC.
Variety 1-A. Second only to the 1870-CC among Carson City double eagles, with a total population of 200-250 coins in all grades. Most of these coins, of course, are VF-XF, but a surprising number (45-55 pieces) are known in the lower grades of AU. At the AU58 level, this qualifies as a Condition Census piece. As with several other important CC gold pieces in this auction, this particular coin has been off the market so long it is unknown to the present generation of collectors. From the look of the flips and the companies represented on several of the flips, this collection must have been formed in the late 1940s and 1950s. One added bonus to this coin having come out of an old-time collection is that it has not been dipped or "improved" in any way. It is in the same state today as it was when this collection was assembled. The surfaces show several light abrasions on the cheek of Liberty and numerous small ones peppered over each side. The only other mentionable "flaw" is a grease stain that was struck into the reverse above the eagle's right (facing) wing. A significant amount of mint luster remains on this high grade '71-CC, and each side shows medium orange-gold coloration.
From The Lewis (Tahoe) Collection.

Auction 408

Sold For:
$63,250.00
1792 50C Washington Getz Pattern Half Dollar, Small Eagle, Copper--Flip Over, Double Strike--VG10 PCGS.
This 1792 Getz copper half dollar shows a dramatic flipover double strike. The surfaces are medium-dark, with even brown coloration. The reverse of the first strike is quite visible with the eagle's head replaced by that of George Washington. The date of the second strike is barely visible at the bottom of that side. The other side mostly shows the reverse of the second strike, though with a light ghost of Washington's head superimposed on that of the eagle. The PCGS holder says the coin has a lettered edge but the edge is, of course, not accessible. The consignor states the edge lettering says ONE HUNDRED FOR A DOLLAR, indicating it was struck over a large cent. This will surely be a coin that will be vigorously pursued by specialists in a variety of fields including Washingtonia, patterns, and errors. The only specimen Breen mentions with a lettered edge was struck over a U.S. large cent of 1794 or 1795. Wear makes it difficult to determine whether this specimen is Breen 1352, one of the original group that Breen estimates as 100-150 pieces originally struck, or a slightly later strike, i.e., Breen 1355-6. The planchet on this specimen is only about 30 mm in diameter, suggesting that it may well be one of a small group of pieces struck a couple of years after 1792, perhaps overstruck on a large cent. A handful of specimens are known overstruck on a variety of silver or copper coins or planchets other than the standard 35 mm silver or copper planchets. The 30 mm planchet results in the tops of the legends being off the planchet. A complete study of this coin will require removal from the slab. Whether struck in 1792 or 1795, it remains a rare and desirable artifact of this nation's early attempts at developing a federal coinage. The flipover double strike only adds to the excitement of viewing (or owning) this coin.

1787 New Jersey Cent--Double Struck--Fine 15 PCGS.
An attractive coin that is covered with a warm caramel color. Close examination reveals that the coin was first struck, then the coin flipped over in the bottom die and rotated, and was struck a second time, effacing much of the original details from the first striking. A faint impression of the date can be made out on the reverse at 9 o'clock. An interesting study piece for the Colonial or error specialist.

1856-S Type Two XF 45 ANACS. Flip-Over Double Strike.
A rare and most unusual error, the flip-over double strike is seldom encountered even on today's mass produced coinage. This is the first such error reported on a 19th century gold coin. The complete story of this piece is detailed in a Collector's Clearinghouse article in the October 19, 1998 issue of
Coin World.
In that article it describes the salient features of this error: "Though not evident at first, a close look at the area above Liberty's crown near OF and AMERICA will betray a well-formed impression of the wreath berries from the coin's obverse. By studying the layout of the coin's design elements and devices one can see that the berries on the obverse above the crown do not coincide with the location of the berries on the reverse."
It is entirely possible that other 19th century gold coins are extant with flip-over double strikes, but close examination is necessary because of the softness of the metal involved. Quoting again from the
Coin World
article: "Modern flip-overs have a tendency to display much more of the first-strike's elements than this gold coin, which is no doubt why it was heretofore undiscovered. The density and hardness of the metal alloys used in today's coins are far greater than the gold. When the gold coin was struck a second time, the pressure of the strike pounded down most of the details, yet some remain. The most dramatic, of course, is the berries."
The coin itself is reasonably well defined for the grade with medium reddish-golden color, a few small abrasions, and die clashing evident on the reverse. This is the first time this rarity has been offered for sale at public auction, and as such it offers advanced error collectors a rare and possibly unique opportunity.

2004-? 25C Texas Statehood Quarter--Double Struck, Second Strike 40% Off Center--MS64 PCGS.
The first strike appears to be normal, however, the piece was not ejected from the dies after the first strike. It was struck a second time, 40% off center toward 4 o'clock, relative to the Statehood side. The second strike is centered at 4:30 relative to the Statehood side of the initial strike. The piece did not flip over between strikes. No planchet was fed between strikes, so no brockage or indent is present. Very rare, and one of only two known Texas errors to date.

1795 1C Plain Edge--Flipover Double Struck--VG8 ANACS.
S-77, R.3. This coin was struck once, then the planchet flipped over and rotated counterclockwise before being struck a second time. Remnants of the first impression are evident on the reverse, in the form of the outline to the Liberty cap and the top of Liberty's head. The second impression is not perfectly centered with the result that the denticles are bold in some areas, yet missing in others. Both sides are smooth for the grade with rich chocolate-brown and tan-brown colors. The first two digits in the date are very faint.
