1908 PR 64 NGC.
Always a popular issue as the first year of the new Saint-Gaudens design, the proofs of 1908 show the distinctive khaki and olive color that is common to all three denominations of gold proofs of this year. This piece has an even blend of those two colors and the surfaces are virtually perfect. When the coin is tilted just so beneath a light, one sees a very faint disturbance in the luster in the central portion of each side. This is the only flaw we can find, otherwise this upper-end coin would surely grade even higher.

Charles Schulz - Peanuts Daily Comic Strip Original Art, dated 8-20-54 (United Features Syndicate, 1954).
Poor ol' Charlie Brown -- as usual, he gets no respect from the other kids. In this case, he gets laughed at by the queen of fussbudgets, Lucy Van Pelt. Regarding Charlie Brown's personality, Charles Schulz has said, "Sure, he's wishy-washy, but I like him. I didn't mean to give him a failure face in the beginning -- I just wanted him to have an anonymous bland round face while the others had more character in theirs." This terrific daily is printed on page 256 of Fantagraphics Books'
The Complete Peanuts 1953 to 1954
. The image area of the daily measures 27" x 5". The paper was folded between panels two and three; otherwise the art is in Excellent condition.

1889-CC $1 MS61 PCGS.
The strike of this piece is sharp and the luster is brilliant with frosty obverse and reverse surfaces. The obverse has quite a few tiny abrasions that defined the MS61 grade, but the reverse is pristine with few marks of any kind. Such an appearance is typical of Morgan dollars that have been stored in their original bags for a number of years. Although the U.S. Treasury held limited quantities of this date, a few mini-hoards or hoardlets have appeared from time to time. The 1889-CC Morgan dollar is one of the famous dates in the series and is always on the want list of many collectors. This example should see spirited bidding at the auction.

Auction 430
| Lot: 5584 | Feb 17, 2007
Sold For:
$20,700.00
1857-O $20 AU58 NGC.
The typical example of this date grades VF or XF at best, with few AU coins still in existence. Mint State examples are impossibly rare, with only three such coins graded by PCGS and NGC. It is probably reasonable to estimate that only three or four Mint State examples still exist. The mintage of 1857 double eagles in New Orleans was just 30,000 coins, and probably not more than 150 of those still survive today. This example is typical with prooflike surfaces and moderate abrasions. Both sides have bright yellow-gold color with a splash of dark toning in the left obverse field. The mintmark is somewhat indistinct, as usual, but all other design elements are nicely detailed. Census: 26 in 58, 2 finer (7/06).

| Lot: 4029 | Sep 16, 2006
Sold For:
$20,700.00
1877-S 10C MS67 PCGS.
Despite a mintage in excess of 2 million coins, this issue is somewhat elusive. In fact, Brian Greer wrote in
The Complete Guide to Liberty Seated Dimes:
"Fairly scarce as a date and difficult to locate in choice XF. One of the most challenging 'common' dates to locate. Many may have been melted to supply silver needed to strike the large quantities of silver dollars, thus accounting for the scarcity of this date." This is a real stunner in a first-generation PCGS holder. Both sides have exquisite surfaces with frosty luster beneath a splendid display of sea-green and gold toning, and additional rose color near the center of the reverse. It is remarkably well-struck for the issue, although the design definition falls short of perfection. Population: 1 in 67, 0 finer (6/06).

Auction 414
| Lot: 5143 | Aug 14, 2006
Sold For:
$20,700.00
1916-D 10C MS63 Full Bands NGC.
The key date to the Mercury dime series, the 1916-D dime is an issue that is in demand in AG or Mint State--and everything in between, as long as the mintmark is visible and the authenticity is certain. Recent price surges for this issue obviously reflect that ceaseless demand, and show no sign of diminution. Mint State examples are certainly difficult to locate, which is why we are pleased to offer no less than four different examples in the present sale. This specimen has a well executed strike and satiny silver luster, with brilliant surfaces complemented by a hint of champagne toning. The all-important central bands are fully split (as are the top and bottom horizontal bands), although the lower diagonal joins the nearby olive leaf, as often seen. A couple of ticks on each band likely help determine the grade, but this piece seems high-end, and there is no doubt at all about its eye appeal. Census: 21 in 63, 86 finer (7/06).
