1794 $1 XF45 PCGS.
Ex: Troy Wiseman Collection. B-1, BB-1, R.4. Die State IV. This is a later die state with the obverse die lapped, shortening the tips of the hair curls, especially toward the bottom. Representing the initial year of production for regular issue silver coins and the dollar denomination, the 1794 was destined to be a classic of United States coinage. This is one of the most important issues ever struck at the Philadelphia Mint. But it is also one of the most elusive silver dollars ever struck, with only 1,758 pieces deemed satisfactory, all from a single pair of dies. An unknown additional quantity were thought to have been rejected and perhaps later used as planchets (at least one 1795 dollar is known struck over a 1794). Most students believe that about 125 to 130 examples of this issue are known, based almost exclusively on the research of the late Jack Collins, and continued by Martin Logies. This example is the 20th specimen listed in Logies' reference, although some of the higher grade pieces are damaged and repaired. In terms of overall desirability, we suggest that this example is among the top dozen. The acquisition of a 1794 silver dollar in any cabinet establishes the collector as a true student of numismatics and a connoisseur of early American coinage.
Apparently after the 1794 copper trial striking was produced and the first several dollars came off the presses, the dies went out of alignment causing the left obverse stars to appear weakly struck, a characteristic seen on virtually every known example, including this one, although the stars and date at the lower left are stronger than on many examples. The medium-gray surfaces, accented in slightly deeper steel-violet hues, are well balanced in all other areas and are about as pleasant as one could hope to find on a mid-grade 1794 dollar. The obligatory adjustment marks are randomly located about the margins and are generally unobtrusive, the deepest found about the D in UNITED. A pinpoint mark abo

1907 $20 High Relief, Flat Rim MS68 PCGS.
The Flat Rim variant of the 1907 High Relief was produced to solve the problem of a wire rim. This "problem" was created by an extruded rim of metal caused by a tiny bit of gold that squeezed between the die and segmented collar from repeated blows from the press.
Flat Rim coins are several times scarcer than their Wire Rim counterparts, but they remain an underrated and largely under-appreciated variant of the High Relief. Even though much of the original mintage was saved by collectors, after nearly 100 years most are in the lower to middle Mint State grades, or they show signs of circulation. Some were doubtless carried as pocket pieces.
This piece has the usual satiny luster common to all High Relief twenties, and the striking details are exceptionally bold. The Capitol building, stars, olive branch, and the Liberty and eagle motifs display excellent definition. The surfaces are immaculately preserved over both sides, exhibiting no signs of mishandling. A barely discernible luster graze on the top rear of the eagle's left wing is mentioned for accuracy. As we noted in the introductory writeup of the 1907 High Relief, some Flat Rim pieces show traces of a localized Wire Rim. Such is the case with the present coin, where some wire-like remnants are seen along portions of the right obverse rim. Population: 1 in 68, 0 finer (9/05).

1931 $20 MS67 PCGS.
The 1931 is one of the foremost rarities in the Saint-Gaudens double eagle series. The total population in Mint State is around 100 pieces, about one-half of which are in the MS64 grade level. The Superb Gem offered in the present lot is the only one of its kind seen by either PCGS or NGC. The surfaces display excellent mint frost, which is characteristic of this issue, and show a pretty light to medium yellow-gold color with subtle greenish undertones. The design elements are sharply struck, and include strong definition on the central devices, as well as on the Capitol building and most of the stars. The surfaces on both sides are immaculately preserved; a handful of trivial marks on the reverse are not worthy of individual mention. While copper stains are common on this issue, the present example reveals just one very light spot located between the eagle's breast and the O in GOD. The frequently seen fine vertical die break is noted through the eagle's beak, and some light grease spots in the area between the eagle's left leg and wing serve to identify the coin.
Some of the better-grade specimens that have appeared at auction in recent years are listed below. In June 1995, Stack's offered a Gem Brilliant Uncirculated piece described as having "lightly frosted yellow-gold surfaces" (lot 996). An NGC-graded MS65 example appeared in Superior's May 1996 sale (lot 1965). The cataloger indicated it was "fully struck and has exceptional color and luster." For identification purposes, a tiny rim tick below the U in UNITED is noted. In their September 1999 sale, Goldberg's sold an NGC-graded MS66 coin described as having orange-gold toning on both sides and as being sharply struck (lot 2028).
We expect the current 1931 specimen to generate spirited bidding. One can only speculate when this coin, the finest known, will come onto the market again. Population: 1 in 67, 0 finer (9/05).

1916 5C Doubled Die Obverse MS64 PCGS.
FS-016, Breen-2599. Listed on page 128 of the 2006
Guide Book.
Although popular today, this Buffalo Nickel error remained unknown for more than four decades after its production. The first published report (per Lange, 2000) appeared in the July, 1962 edition of
The Numismatic Scrapbook.
Today, circulated examples number only 100-150 coins. Mint State representatives are even rarer, and Lange's estimate is no more than 10 pieces. PCGS reports six Uncirculated examples, all falling into the MS 62-64 grade range (8/05), and NGC has seen a further eight coins graded MS63 through MS64. Allowing for possible resubmissions, the population reports of the major grading services appear to confirm the accuracy of Lange's estimate.
Given the rarity of this error nickel in Mint State, the attractive example that we highlight here should be of obvious importance to advanced Buffalo nickel collectors. The surfaces have been carefully preserved with a colorful endowment of greenish-gray patina over both sides. This deepens to antique-gold and crimson near the peripheral areas. We have no complaints about the sharp striking quality, save for a small amount of detail at the central regions. The boldly doubled digits in the date are readily evident to the naked eye. The fields and devices are smooth enough to warrant consideration even at the MS65 grade level, but accuracy compels us to mention a single, small corrosion spot on the obverse just before the Indian's chin. The latter feature notwithstanding, we unhesitatingly declare this coin as one of the finest known survivors of this rare and popular 20th century error. Population: 2 in 64, 0 finer (8/05).

1880 $4 Flowing Hair. Judd-1657, Pollock-1857. PR65 NGC.
R.6. The Barber design. Reeded Edge.
From The Gold Rush Collection.
This specimen is quite pleasing for a number of reasons. The mirror fields are excellent and show only the faintest signs of hairlines. The strike is fairly sharp for this issue, although we note minor weakness at the center of Liberty's head as nearly always seen. The striation lines from the planchet rolling process run down to the left at approximately a 70 degree angle from horizontal. Identifiable by a tiny thin scratch on Liberty's temple which extends horizontally into her hair, and also by a spot on the lower obverse between the 6 and the star above, touching both. Another spot is seen on the outer point of the star between A and M. One the reverse we note a minute planchet flake located below the upper top serif on the E of STATES. There is also a tiny copper spot above the tail of the R in AMERICA. The NGC and PCGS population reports show a total of an even dozen graded this high, with just three pieces seen finer of this issue.
Following a suggestion from Honorable John A. Kasson, minister to Austria from America, a gentleman who traveled widely, the $4 piece was conceived as being interchangeable at par (more or less) with similarly sized gold coins issued by various European nations. To promote international acceptance and ready determination of its metallic content, the obverse inscription was stated in the metric system, and noted that the $4 contained 6 parts gold, .3 parts silver, and .7 parts copper, yielding 7 grams of alloy, 90% gold as stated.
The reverse stated the denomination as "ONE STELLA 400 CENTS," within a 5-pointed star. The long used motto E PLURIBUS UNUM appeared above, and the experimental motto DEO EST GLORIA below. Surrounding is the inscription: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA/FOUR DOL. Interestingly, the particular reverse design states the denomination
