1837 Millions for Defence, Bushnell Fantasy, Low-27A, "HT-41B," W-X-400b, R.9, MS65 NGC.
Brass, plain edge. Ex: Boyd-Ford. The Schuman plate coin (page 60). In
The True
Hard Times Tokens,
Dr. Schuman reports brass examples of Low-26, Low-27, and Low-71. The Low-27 is offered here, and we have no further information about the Low-26 nor the Low-71. This beautiful Gem retains reflective brassy yellow surfaces and sharp design definition. This brass impression is though unique, as it was when Lyman Low wrote: "I know of but one specimen and believe it to be unique." The Dice-Hicks cataloger described this piece as one of the highlights of that collection, and it is certainly a highlight of Dr. Schuman's collection.
Ex: F.C.C. Boyd; John J. Ford, Jr. (Stack's, 6/2004), lot 79; Dice-Hicks Collection (Stack's, 7/2008), lot 3039.

(1800) Washington Funeral Urn Medal, Silver, MS61 NGC. Baker-166A, Fuld 1-B, Musante GW-70.
Silver, 29 mm, plain edge. 8.76 grams. George Washington died on December 14, 1799. These medals were coined early in 1800 to be worn at his Civic Funeral Procession held on February 22 in Boston. The obverse carries a uniformed bust of Washington encircled by the fitting inscription HE IS IN HIS GLORY, THE WORLD IN TEARS. The reverse displays a funeral urn with the inscribed initials GW. Both sides of this piece exhibit steel-gray toning that lightens substantially around the devices. Since people actually did wear these medals to pay homage to the late President, all known pieces display the characteristic hole through the top. The plug was neatly executed. A fleeting opportunity for the Washington enthusiast. Russell Rulau and George Fuld in their book Medallic Portraits of Washington speculate that only 25 to 40 examples of this variety are known in silver.

1899 $1 PR66+ Cameo PCGS. CAC.
The low circulation strike mintage (330,000 pieces) adds to demand for 1899 proofs, especially in high grades such as this high-end Premium Gem Cameo example. A thin band of blue toning sits closest to the rim, with a wider ring of amber-gold toning that lightens to a faint glow toward the central devices. Frosted motifs offer bold contrast with the smoothly mirrored fields. A sharp strike exists on both sides of this attractive, high-grade proof that earns both the PCGS Plus designation and CAC endorsement. Population: 10 in 66 (3 in 66+) Cameo, 10 finer. CAC: 8 in 66, 5 finer (6/23).

1881 $3 AU58 PCGS.
Writing in their 2005 series reference, Dave Bowers and Doug Winter explain that "most examples on the market are in worn grades." Of the 500 coins struck, they estimate 80 to 120 pieces are in circulated condition and only 20 to 30 are Mint State. That places this borderline-Uncirculated representative at the upper end of what can still be considered collectible for the 1881 three dollar issue, balancing out both quality and affordability. Hardly a trace of rub is present over the devices. Orange-gold surfaces display the partial field reflectivity expected of a coin that formed part of such a small mintage. Light hairlines and tiny ticks do not detract.

1858 P1C Flying Eagle Cent, Judd-207a, Pollock-244, Snow-PT16d, R.8, PR64 PCGS.
The obverse displays a hooked-neck eagle flying left with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above and the date below. The reverse is the same used to coin regular issue 1858 Flying Eagle cents. Struck in nickel or German silver with a plain edge. These were also struck in copper-nickel and copper. According to USPatterns.com, these were included in 12-piece sets that were sold to collectors. Only three examples are known in this composition. Pale accents of peach-orange, blue, and lavender complement clean nickel-gray surfaces. Housed in a green label holder.

1798 $5 Large Eagle, Large 8, 14 Stars Reverse, BD-3, R.5, XF40 PCGS.
Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/d, with a heavy radial die crack through E in AMERICA. The 1798 Capped Bust Right half eagle, with the Large Eagle reverse, claims a respectable mintage of 24,867 pieces, with seven die varieties known for the date and type (a single variety is known with the old Small Eagle reverse). This coin represents the BD-3 variety, with the unique 14 star reverse. The BD-4 is an elusive variety, with a surviving population of 35-50 examples in all grades. This pleasing XF40 specimen displays some light wear on the design elements, with an extensive network of die cracks on the reverse. The lightly abraded orange-gold surfaces retain traces of original mint luster in sheltered areas.

1918-S 50C MS65 PCGS.
The 1918-S is a better date in high grades, and it is notably scarce in MS65 with just a handful of finer pieces known. This coin displays glistening, radiant mint luster and frosty, luminous fields. A loupe fails to reveal a single notable abrasion in the fields, and a few microscopic marks on the high points of Liberty's figure are hardly discernible. Moderate central strike softness is as usual for this issue, although Liberty's head is well defined. Eye appeal is excellent. Housed in a green label holder. Population: 34 in 65 (3 in 65+), 5 finer (8/22).

1794 1/2 C High Relief Head, C-9, B-9, R.2, MS60 Brown PCGS.
Ex: R. Cohen. Manley Die State 3.0, the terminal die state for this variety with a die crack through Liberty's cap and another through the tops of LIBERTY, and a reverse rim cud that covers several dentils at 6:30. The combination of die wear and a uneven strike yields considerable roughness as struck, with myriad original planchet marks evident on both sides. However, this outstanding piece retains cartwheel luster with splashes of original mint red on its olive-brown surfaces, and it is extremely rare as such. PCGS has only certified 32 Mint State 1794 half cents of all varieties (2/22). Our EAC grade AU55.

1824/1 $2 1/2 BD-1, R.5, AU53 PCGS.
Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a. With no quarter eagles struck in 1822 or 1823 and a minimal production planned for 1824, Mint officials salvaged a leftover 1821 die and overdated the second 1 in the date with a 4. A tiny tine emerges from the slope of 4 to confirm the overdate. No other dies were made, and a small mintage of 2,600 1824/1 quarter eagles was the result. Perhaps as few as 50 to 60 pieces survive from that mintage in all grades. The obverse is invariably softly struck -- often resembling a coin at least two levels less sharp than the awarded technical grade. This example is indeed weakly struck throughout Liberty's portrait. The reverse is much sharper. Partially reflective fields and bold peripheral elements support the AU53 designation. We seldom offer a finer example of this elusive Capped Head To Left quarter eagle, which displays fine-grained lemon-yellow surfaces and only minor abrasions or marks. PCGS Population: (2/18). NGC Census: (0/0). CDN: $13,000 Whsle. Bid for NGC/PCGS AU53. Mintage 2,600.

1925-S 1C MS64 Red PCGS.
The 1925-S has proven to be quite scarce in Red condition, and examples grading finer than the present MS64 coin are decidedly rare. This piece displays satiny copper-gold luster throughout flowlined surfaces struck from eroded dies. A few small flecks do not detract. Housed in an old green label holder. Population: 59 in 64 (1 in 64+), 12 finer (10/21).
