1857-C $5 AU55 PCGS. Winter-1.
The surface quality is especially smooth for this Choice About Uncirculated Charlotte five. Minor abrasions exist, but they are shallow and well-hidden, while a sharp strike commands attention. The 1857 Charlotte issue is among the more available C-Mint half eagles, but examples increase dramatically in scarcity approaching Mint State grades. The glossy appeal of this AU55 coin will satisfy the most discriminating bidder.

1857-O $5 XF45 PCGS. Winter-1.
Ex: The Fairmont Collection. The 1857-O is a scarce issue in any grade, coming from a heavily circulated mintage of only 13,000 half eagles. The issue is most common in VF to XF, and PCGS reports a mere three examples in Mint State (4/26). This XF45 displays olive-gold surfaces with delicate undertones of orange. Although most mint luster has subsided, the fields display a few small tinges of prooflike reflectivity. This Southern mint half eagle is generally well-struck with only the typical softness showing on Liberty's curls, the eagle's talons and the mintmark. Distributed marks are light save for a couple of minor dings to the right and underneath Liberty's bun, which make strong pedigree markers.
