Andrew Jackson Peace Medal. Copper. 75.70 mm. Uncirculated. Even golden-tan color, this is a sharply defined specimen from dies engraved by Moritz Furst (obverse) and John Reich (reverse). Struck from the original dies, the obverse shows faint evidence of die rust. A pleasing example of this large sized Jackson peace medal. Ex: Julian Leidman Collection (B&M, 4/86), lot 4369, flip included. Major General Zachary Taylor Medal. Copper. 90 mm. MI-24. A choice About Uncirculated example with a lovely reddish-brown finish. From dies engraved by Charles Cushing Wright and one of about 176 pieces struck. The obverse shows Taylor facing right with crossed oak and laurel branches below. The reverse is an aerial view of the battle of Buena Vista, February 22 and 23, 1847 within entwined snakes that represent the two opposing armies. The battle scene is elaborately detailed and truly a wonder to behold. Ex: Julian Leidman Collection (B&M, 4/86), lot 4247, flip accompanies. Millard Fillmore Medal. Copper. 63 mm. 2245.9 grains. About Uncirculated. Julian IP-31. Struck from the original obverse and reverse dies, showing doubling on Willson's name on the lower reverse. A later striking as evidenced by the die crack across the Indian's leg and the presence of some die rust. There are two small parallel marks on Fillmore's lower neck that serve as identifiers. Ex: Dreyfuss Collection (B&M, 4/86), lot 5163, flip accompanies. Earlier from the Kessler-Spangenberger Collection (NASCA, 4/81), lot 1622. (Total: 3 medals)

Slavery Items of Questionable Origin. The following items we offer for sale as one lot, but we cannot guarantee that they are as represented. The identity of these items was related to the consignor many years ago by noted numismatist Ray Byrne, but he was unable to ever get a second opinion to corroborate Bynes' attributions. We leave the question of identity to the purchaser of the lot. Included are: Undated Tennessee slave tag, brass, 35 mm., VF with light patina and holed at the top for suspension; undated Ceylon slave token, 31 mm., Fine-VF and holed at the top for suspension, apparently for use as a tag in the St. Sebastian Mills and counterstamped with the number 81 on the reverse; another St. Sebastian tag, same grade, counterstamped with 62 on the reverse; undated Underground Railway pass, 19 mm., Fine and made from a cut down Large cent exposing the head of Liberty only on the obverse; another as above but the date 1851 can be made out, 22 mm., Fine with large punch covering the eye of Liberty; and another, undated, 19 mm. Massachusetts December 10, 1781 $16 Choice Extremely Fine.
We are pleased to offer here three examples of a previously unknown note. The entire issue is unpriced in Newman and noted as "Extremely Rare" in Friedberg. Until this small group appeared, no examples were known of this $16 denomination, and the other denominations ($4, $6 and $8) were represented by one to three of each. These three notes turned up with a large group of canceled Massachusetts Guaranteed notes and a small group of high-grade Massachusetts fiscal paper, much of which is also in this sale. We know of two other pieces, also $16, that turned up with this group. All three of the pieces that we offer are essentially identical, varying only in centering. Had but a single piece turned up, it could well have realized $15,000 or more. With this small group all appearing at once, an accurate estimate is impossible. We're confident that these pieces will surely realize . . .
