1852 $50 Assay Office Fifty Dollar, 887 Thous. AU 58 NGC.
K-13, R.5. The official dissolution of the private firm of Moffat & Co. on February 14, 1852 left its three remaining partners, Joseph R. Curtis, Philo H. Perry, and Samuel H. Ward, free to embark on other enterprises. Shortly after, the three men established the United States Assay Office of Gold and acquired the federal government's contract to issue gold coins and ingots. By 1849, Military Governor George Mason authorized a State Assay Office for California. Although historically significant as the United States's only assay office to operate under state authority, the institution was woefully inadequate to meet the demands of California's burgeoning population. Even though Senators Thomas Hart Benton of Missouri and William M. Authorized by Congressional act on September 30, 1850, the United States Assay Office's contract passed naturally to San Francisco's most respectable private mint: Moffat & Co. After moving to a larger building on Montgomery Street between Clay and Commercial, Moffat & Co. received the services of Augustus Humbert, a United States Assayer charged by the federal government to represent its interests in the establishment. After vague accusations eroded the once solid reputation of his firm, John Little Moffat sold out his interest in Moffat & Co. to Curtis, Perry, and Ward, at which point our story arrives at the birth of the United States Assay Office of Gold.
Although Augustus Humbert remained as the official g
