A scarce Southern gold issue. All 1859-C half eagles show soft definition on the eagle, because the reverse die was improperly annealed. The obverse is much sharper and displays generous pockets of remaining lemon-gold luster. Moderate ticks are noted southeast of the eye and above the date.

Ex: The Fairmont Collection. The 1859 issue of 16,734 half eagles out of Philadelphia rivals the branch mint issues of the era as to rarity and availability in Mint State. The certifications at PCGS and NGC total just 190 examples, and only 10 Mint State half eagles are certified between them (4/26). Examples in Choice AU and finer are infrequently seen, and during the last twenty years we have handled an average of just one per year. Rich olive-gold patina is mixed with lustrous hues of apricot and orange on the borders and within the protected areas. This CAC-endorsed half eagle is well-struck and shows only slight softness on the central motifs, along with light blending.
