Edward Steichen Signed Photograph. Here we have an 8" x 10", black and white photograph of Steichen, signed as "Edward Steichen 1969." Steichen was born in Luxemborg in 1879, coming to the United States as a toddler. His strong sense of design led to studies in painting and photography. He served as commander of aerial photography during World War I, and then became chief photographer of Vogue and Vanity Fair magazines. He photographed many famous celebrities, including Greta Garbo. His most famous work was an exhibit entitled, "The Family of Man," (1955). He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Kennedy in 1963. The photograph is in very fine condition; slight cockling on the upper edge; otherwise pristine.

Three Theodore Roosevelt Paper Items. This lot contains three items pertaining to Theodore Roosevelt. The first is a 9.75" x 6.75" black and white photograph of a class of children posing for their school portrait with an American flag draped picture of T.R. in the front row. The class is from the Garfield school in San Francisco, no year is indicated. The photograph is in very fine condition; light curling on the lower right corner. The second item is a 5" x 7.75" cardboard drawing of the ex-president in his iconic military uniform and riding a horse. This is likely playing on the image that T.R. gained as the "Hero of San Juan Hill". The phrase "Commander in Chief" appears in the upper right corner. It is in very fine condition; light flaking around the corners and edges; still dark and saturated. The third and final item is a 1904 message and song sheet put out by Theodore Roosevelt to the young voters. Eight pages, 4.5" x 6", printed in red, white, and blue ink, and in very fine condition. Light soiling on front cover.
Cleveland/Stevenson Novelty Pill Box 34mm. This gilded brass pill box is constructed in such a way as to appear like a stack of coins or poker chips. It declares "My Stack on Cleveland." Sullivan-DeWitt GC-1892-61. The Cleveland side is gem mint with all the original gilding. The Stevenson side has traces.
1905 Illustrated Inaugural History Program. This piece is perfect for the T.R. collector, or one who collects inaugural material. A fine leather bound collectible, which will be excellent for display. In very fine condition; covers are oversized and the edges are slightly bent.
1889 George Washington Centennial Inauguration Badge. This red, white, and blue badge was issued to commemorate the 1789 inauguration 100 years after its occurrence. The badge consists of two large white metal sections both backed by a red, white, and blue ribbon. The upper bar features a Union eagle perched atop the words "Centennial Inauguration" flanked by two shields bearing the dates 1789 and 1889. The large central piece is a five-pointed star with Washington's profile facing right and the words: "First in War First in Peace and First in the Hearts of His Countrymen - New York City April 30th 1889." An impressive piece to commemorate one of the numerous Washington memorials celebrated. The metal is lightly tarnished; pin still intact; the ribbon has torn on the right edge and nearly completely through.
1905 Illustrated Inaugural History Program. This item is the "souvenir" variety of the program bound in leather offered elsewhere in this sale. Bound in paper wraps, with colorful drawings and photographs on the front cover. The inside of this example, is full of the same information offered in the leather bound copy, but is also accompanied by numerous advertisements and sponsors, which made it affordable to sell for the price marked on the cover: "25 cents"! Around 100 pages long, and in fine condition; front cover is lightly soiled; edges are worn and torn; fully intact. Measures 7.75" x 10.75".

This letter is written to a Mr. Jack Mark and reads in part, "Suffice it to say that Roosevelt was a far sicker man than many people realized and he went two directions at almost the same time. Roosevelt, one of America's most beloved presidents. The letter is in very fine condition; usual folds are present; small stain in the header of the stationery; small pencil notation on upper right corner.
Sean O'Casey Typed Letter Signed "Sean O'Casey." 8" x 10", one page letter, dated November 23, 1951, written from Devon, England. Sean O'Casey was a noted Irish playwright, and the first one to write about Dublin's working class, as well as to treat his female characters sympathetically. This letter contains information about the production of the play, Shadow of a Gunman, which was O'Casey's first accepted play at the famous Abbey Theatre in Dublin. The letter is in very fine condition; usual folds are present; slight yellowing of the paper has occurred from age and acid degradation; blue ink notations written over the header of the document; two small blue smudges along the right edge. 1910 Phrenological Journal Featuring an Article of Teddy Roosevelt. Volume 123, number 7, from July of 1910; entitled: The Phrenological Journal and Science of Health - An Illustrated Magazine of Human Nature. It was published by Fowler & Wells Co., of New York. The portion about Teddy is in the section about the "Success of Great Men". A wonderful and novel journal about a subject that has long since fallen into the realm of quackery. However, during T.R.'s time it was a very valid and fascinating way to evaluate the great and evil things about men. Certainly a wonderful novelty for any Roosevelt fan. Measures 6.75" x 9.25", and in very fine condition; light overall toning on covers and pages; corners rounded.
Photography
Cased Ambrotype of a Seated Black Man. A beautiful cased 1/6 plate ambrotype of a black man seated and reclining with his arm over an unidentified object. With original penned attribution pinned to velvet liner: "Uncle Augustus Floyd, 2d Sept. 78 JBJ." Brass mat imprinted with photographer "W. Peeck". A wonderful image. Due to the fuzziness of the picture, it is hard to but the man may actually be a white man wearing make-up as was typical in some of the more cruel farse-like comedies of the day. Case cover has begun to become unhinged slightly.

Early Winfield Scott Tin Box Although "only" of Civil War vintage, this is still a great 3-D item for this very tough candidate. Fairly large tin box with hinged lid (now separated), the front a colorful paper label for "First Quality Cream Tartar," and featuring a nice portrait of Scott with eagle and flags. The label itself is a wonderful example of "period" lithography by H. L. Legien, Gold St., New York, and recorded by J. O. Cooke "in the year 1862." Scott, of course, was still alive and at the end of his illustrious career, serving as supreme commander of the Union Armies. The sides of the box were painted blue (original) and are extensively scratched. The label itself shows overall even "aging," but still has a pleasing, if weathered, display appearance. 7.5" x 6" x 9.5" in height.
1864 George McClellan "Sworn to Defend" Campaign Medal in White Metal. 34mm across, and listed as GMcC 1864-9 in Sullivan-Dewitt. 1860 Stephen A. Douglas Store Card Token in Copper. Measuring 19mm, and unlisted in Sullivan-Dewitt. This store card features a profile of Stephen A. Douglas on the obverse, facing right, and "Stephen A. Douglas" around. The reverse reads: "H. Upmeyer - Jeweller - Milwaukee". Roped border and small foliate decorations between the text lines. In excellent condition; still contains much of its red character and reflective qualities; light soiling on both sides; toning present on edge.
1860 John Bell Campaign Medal in Copper. Measuring 28mm across and listed as Sullivan-Dewitt JBELL 1860-7. The obverse features Bell facing right with "John Bell, Union Candidate For The Presidency. 1860". The reverse has this inscription around: "The Constitution And The Union", enclosing within a circle a wreath of corn and inside this wreath reads: "Now - And - Forever". The obverse features Bell facing right with "John Bell, Union Candidate For The Presidency. 1860". The reverse has this inscription around: "The Constitution And The Union", enclosing within a circle a wreath of corn and inside this wreath reads: "Now - And - Forever". In excellent condition; this example has been holed, and is not as made; several edge dents at 9, 10, and 12 o'clock. Nice overall golden patina.
1844 Henry Clay Campaign Medal in White Metal. Measures 35mm, and is listed as Sullivan-Dewitt HC 1844-21. The obverse of this large medal features Clay facing right and "Henry Clay" around. The reverse has a long and busy inscription reading: "Let Us Encourage Our Own Manufactures"; around. Enclosed: "Born. - In Virginia AP 12 1777 - 1799 - Opposes The - Alien & Sedition Law, - 1806. - Elected to U S Sen: - 1814, Comm; At Ghent. - 1821. Compromise of Misso: QU: - 1833. 1840 William Henry Harrison Campaign Medal in White Metal. Measuring 37mm across and listed in Sullivan Dewitt as WHH 1840-13. Harrison - Born Feb 9 1775." The reverse features the famous log cabin and cider motif; this particular motif was repeated and modified on many of the Harrison medals. This particular example can be identified by several key features: five boughs on the tree at the left, log cabin has both a door and a window; the flag on the roof is blowing left and has a liberty cap on the top of the pole; small bush at the right; and a mug of cider on top of a barrel on the left. Plain edge and holed. In excellent condition; still very reflective; light soiling in areas of low relief on reverse.
William Henry Harrison Clothing Button. Unlisted in Sullivan-Dewitt, measures 16mm across. The button features a nude bust of Harrison facing right on a raised square field. He reverse bears no makers stamp or date, just the original shank and a lined border. In excellent condition; bears a fine patina, with very little scratching and wear; the reverse has mild verdigris.
Rare Large William Henry Harrison "Fantasy" Medal in White Metal. Around 1860 the collecting of political medalets became a popular craze, largely in numismatic circles. Demand led to the re-striking of some legitimate issues, as well as the creation of a variety of entirely new fantasy designs for sale to collectors. The present specimen is one of the most desirable of that genre. It was made by C. Wyllys Betts of New Haven, and is found with various "mule" reverses. This is the best version, of course, with the log cabin reverse. Choice condition; one edge nick at 12 o'clock. Diameter 45 mm.
1852 Winfield Scott "Wounded" Medal in Brass. Listed as Sullivan-Dewitt WS 1852-12, and measuring 28mm across. The obverse features a bust of Scott facing left, in full military attire. Around: "Maj. Gen. Winfield Scott U.S.A." and "H.W. Hayden SC." below the bust. The reverse inscription reads: "Scott Wounded - Lundy's Lane". The scene in the center shows numerous soldiers assisting a wounded Scott who is lying on the ground. The battle of Lundy's Lane took place in the War of 1812, and is considered to be one the bloodiest battles ever fought on Canadian soil. Scott's injuries and his bravery during a battle where all seemed lost would advance his career exponentially. In excellent condition with a lovely patina; one small nick at 12 o'clock on the reverse in the field.
1852 Winfield Scott "First In War" Medal in Brass. Measuring 30mm in diameter, and listed as Sullivan-Dewitt WS 1852-11. The obverse features a military bust of Scott facing right with the inscription: "Gen Winfield Scott First In War First In Peace" around. The reverse bears the inscription: "Scott & Graham Union & Constitution", with a star to the left and right. This encloses a displayed eagle with a union shield on its chest. The eagle has an olive branch in its right claw and three arrows in the left. The dies for this particular medal were cut in Waterbury, Connecticut. In very fine condition; light toning and staining on the obverse, especially near Scott's right side; dark toning in areas of low relief on the reverse; holed.
1840 Martin Van Buren "Weighed in the Balance" Medal in Brass. Measuring 24mm and listed as Sullivan-Dewitt MVB 1840-9. The obverse reads around: "Martin Van Buren . Born Dec. 5. 1782" enclosing a bust of Van Buren facing left. The point of the bust is even with the letter "R" in "Born". The reverse reads: " Weighed In The Balance & Found Wanting" around. Enclosing scales balanced in favor of "Democrats" over "Whigs". The year "1840" sits in the center of the scales. In very fine condition; light toning affecting both sides; minor striations on obverse; holed as made; roped border.
1837 "Centre Market" Hard Times Token in Copper. Listed as HT 239 in Rulau's exhaustive reference book United States Tokens 1700-1900, and measures 28mm in diameter. The obverse of the token is a standard hard times token Liberty, facing left wearing a crown of olive leaves. Thirteen stars encircle her and the words "E Pluribus Unum" appear above and "1837" below. Rulau identifies this variety as 239 because the scroll extends to the second "U" in "Unum". The reverse features a Greek temple in the center with "14th Ward N. York" below. Around: "Centre Market - Accommodation" and two holly leaves separating the phrases. In choice condition; very red on the obverse and a fine dark brown patina on the reverse; small ding in the center of the reverse.
1852 Franklin Pierce Campaign Medal in Brass. Measuring 26mm across and listed as Sullivan-Dewitt FP 1852-5, this lovely token is one of just a few varieties made for President Pierce. His handsome appearance should have prompted a larger output of items bearing his likeness, however, his medals are among the scarcest. This particular example bears his portrait in civilian clothes facing right. Around: "Gen Frank. Pierce The Statesman & Soldier". The reverse reads: "For President - Gen. Frank. Pierce - Of - New Hampshire - For - Vice President - William R. King - Of - Alabama." Roped edge, holed as made. In excellent condition; light toning on both sides; small blemish at 7 o'clock on the obverse.
Theodore Roosevelt "Square Deal" Cigar Box. This unique novelty cigar box features a portrait of Roosevelt inside the lid. Above his natural color portrait it reads: "Square Deal" and below: "Justly Popular". Roosevelt's "Square Deal" essentially put a stop to bad trusts and encourages good ones. For instance meat had to be processed safely and with proper sanitary condition. Drugs and food had to be labeled accurately, and could not deliberately mislead the consumer just to make a profit. The term has become a generic word for ethical business practice. This box celebrates this landmark policy. Measuring 8.5" x 5.25" x 2.5", and presenting in faux wood tones and red and white letters, this box will make a great addition to any political collection. In excellent condition; light overall toning; corners slightly bumped; moderate rubbing on the base.

A Marvelous Series of Ten (10) French, Real-photo Postcards Featuring Black Children Performing a Dance Entitled "Le Cake-Walk" By the 1890's, the "Cakewalk" was the hottest dance in the United States... soon to catch on when exported to Europe. There is some dispute as to how it originated, but in 1889, "The Creole Show" would feature the dance, and in 1892 the first Cakewalk contest was held in a New York ballroom. As detailed by Wayne Chapman, Associate Professor of Theatre Arts, University of Arkansas at Little Rock, the dance most certainly found its roots in "The Chalk Line Walk" as it was originally known, popular in the Southern plantations as early as 1850. It is believed to have originated in Florida among African American slaves who got the basic idea from the Seminole Indians. Many of the special movements of the cake-walk, such as bending the back of the body and the dropping of the hands at the wrists, were also a distinct feature in certain tribes of the African Kaffir dances. "Walkers," as they were called, saw over time the dance evolve into an exaggerated parody of white, upper-class ballroom figures who would imitate the mannerisms of those in the master's house with such dignified walking, bowing low, waving canes, doffing hats, and high kicking grand promenade. The idea of the Cakewalk was that of a couple promenading in a dignified manner, high stepping and kicking, mimicking high society. Some of the better plantation owners would bake a cake on Sundays and invite the neighbors over and have a contest of the slaves. Different prizes were given, but originally it was a cake and whoever won would get the cake...thus creating the still used term, "That takes the cake!" Ten items all together, each in fine condition.

Most Unusual 1876 Samuel Tilden Portrait Pin With Photo Under Glass. High "dome" glass covering, as in varieties found for Greeley and Grant from 1872. However, Sullivan does not list this 1876 item and we have not seen another. Photo is light but visible, otherwise excellent condition with original pin. From the Joe Brown Collection. Diameter 22mm.
1852 Franklin Pierce-William King Campaign Ticket. An election ticket from the state of New York; 2.75" X 9.75". A defiant eagle perched on a boulder holds a banner in its beak inscribed "Pierce and King." Pierce material is very scarce. Horatio Seymour's name is also on this ticket for Governor! In very fine condition; light overall toning; small fold down the center.
"George Clark Ambrotype" Lincoln 1860 Campaign Badge. This is the largest (2" x 2.5") and one of the most important of all Abraham Lincoln campaign badges- the first photographic item to appear in the campaign. It is hugely popular with collectors and recent auction records show perfect specimens selling in the $30,000 range. The Brady "Cooper Union" portrait of the Republican candidate is housed in a decorative gilt metal frame, holed for suspension and with the original "For President" insert card showing the manufacturer as Geo. Clark, Jr. & Co. (of Boston). Because of the nature of their manufacture, these items are quite fragile. This ambrotype has areas of flaking or bubbling of the emulsion and one distinct area of loss between right cheek and ear. There are several streaks of light discoloration as well. Still the overall appearance is pleasing and it would certainly make a fine addition to even an advanced collection.

(He goes on to discuss the Warren Commission Report, of which he is the last surviving member.); and a nice black and white photograph of Ford signed at the bottom. Four pieces in excellent condition -- an excellent group-lot. Accompanied by COA from PSA/DNA.

It reads in part, "The following lines occasioned by the erecting a Liberty Pole near New Chester Meeting House- While we view the modern Liberty Pole it excites sensations which we can't control of ambitious measures, much disputed here and there. Which occasioned War in this western hemisphere. But let no material points now be here contended, seeing as we unite to celebrate all hostilities ended." It is a very touching and sentimental speech. The handwriting is very beautiful.

The condition of the manuscript is fine; usual folds are present; several areas of foxing near the upper edge.

1956 Re-Elect Eisenhower Green Blazer with Pins Our guess is that the person who modified this dark green, three-button jacket was a pretty serious Ike fan - you would have to be! On the back is embroidered "Re-Elect 1956 Eisenhower" and on both lapels are a grouping of various Ike pins, lapel pins, buttons, etc. - twelve all together. Jacket and instant Dwight Eisenhower campaign memorabilia collection are both in excellent condition. Very interesting and, almost certainly, unique.

Two Oversize Patriotic Association Certificates, one from the Francis Scott Key Memorial Association dated 1911, with a lovely color representation of Key in the center, and one from the American Flag House and Betsy Ross House Association of Philadelphia dated 1898. The painting depicted in the center of the certificate, "Birth of Our Nation's Flag," is now displayed at the State Museum in Harrisburg, as it is so large it would not fit into the Ross House in Philadelphia. The key certificate is almost new, the Ross has a few tape repaired splits and folds, little of which shows on the front.

Jimmy Carter "Bill Signing" Presentation Pen. Collectors are accustomed to seeing "bill signing" pens, however, this one is presented in such a way that it is perfect for display right "out of the box", so to speak. The pen has been mounted along with its original presentation box as well as a letter explaining the bill and a photo of the president himself. The letter and pen were presented to Robert E. Bauman, a U.S. Representative from Maryland, who on this particular year (1979) was on the Committee on Merchant Marine and Fisheries and the Panama Canal Subcommittee. Bauman is perhaps best known for his personal vices rather than his political triumphs. An avid conservative and opponent of homosexuality, it was surprising for most when he was arrested for soliciting sex from a male minor. The letter to this congressman reads as follows: "On September 27, 1979, I was pleased to sign into law H.R. 111, the Panama Canal Act of 1979, which implements the Panama Canal Treaty of 1977. This Act provides a framework in which the United States can exercise its right and to operate and defend the Canal in a manner consistent with our responsibilities and obligations under the Treaty. In appreciation for your crucial role in this landmark legislation, I want you to have the enclosed pen commemorating my signing of the Act. Please accept it along with my personal thanks."

The Panama Canal Act of 1979 essentially kept American military in the Canal area until 1999, at which time the Panamanians would take over control. A wonderful display, and even more interesting due to its illustrious recipient! In pristine condition. Full display measures 9.5" x 20".

The reverse features a wreath of olive branches consisting of three-seven leaves and twenty berries, distinguishing it from a few other strikings. Reeded edge, holed as made. The slogan: "The American Way Of Life" appears above the men and the flag. Made of metal instead of celluloid, this example bears a few trivial scratches on the face of the button. 1920 James Cox ¾" "Peace - Progress - Prosperity" Pinback Button. Cox's unsuccessful bid for the Presidency in 1920 is a very popular election for collectors. While the larger size versions of these buttons command the most attention, this pristine little gem features the popular "Peace - Progress - Prosperity" slogan and the iconic black and white portrait of Cox in the center. In very fine condition; missing its backpaper; original pin still intact; light bubbling of the celluloid around the rim.
Woodrow Wilson and Thomas Marshall 7/8" Jugate Pinback. This attractive blue and gold design features Wilson and Marshall's portraits inside beaded gold borders, surrounded by gold foliate designs. The background is a dark and very saturated blue color. The contrast of the colors and the black and white photos makes this a handsome display piece. 1928/32 Herbert Hoover and Charles Curtis 7/8" Jugate Pinback Button. This black and white jugate features portraits of Hoover and Curtis in dark suits. Their names appear below the portraits. In fine condition; celluloid separation at 2 and 3 o'clock.
1904 Theodore Roosevelt 1 ¼" Pinback Portrait Button. This button features an older erudite looking Roosevelt, seated, wearing a dark suit and long mustache. Below the black and white portrait is: "Theodore Roosevelt". A rather Spartan but striking button, from one of the few presidents who could represent so much with just his look. Original backpaper and pin still intact; backpaper off center as made, otherwise excellent.
1936 Alf Landon 7/8" Jugate Campaign Button. This black and white jugate features the portraits of Landon and Knox against a dark background. Landon ran against the extremely popular Franklin D. Roosevelt. This button is in choice condition; very clean; an excellent piece for display; original; pin still intact. Made by the Bastian Brothers.

1924 Calvin Coolidge 7/8" "Home Town" Pinback Button. Calvin Coolidge was the favorite son of Plymouth, Vermont. He was the running mate of Republican candidate Warren G. Harding in 1920 and became President when Harding died of a heart attack in 1923. When he ran for re-election in 1924, supporters in his hometown started a club to support his campaign. This button is from that very club. It is red, white, and blue with a green border and lettering. On the left side is an ovoid portrait of Coolidge. Items from this club are extremely collectible and semi-scarce. In excellent condition; original backpaper and pin intact; light toning overall, but otherwise pristine.

Dewey's portrait appears on the left and the text is a bright white that nicely contrasts with the dark blue background. In very fine condition; light fading of the blue background; missing backpaper; original pin intact.
1932 Hoover-Curtis 7/8" Jugate Pinback Button. Known to be from 1932, rather than 1928, because its mate is for Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Garner rather than Smith and Robinson. Tin litho type buttons are more scarce than their celluloid brothers, and this one is in excellent condition; several minor surface scratches, some of which detract, but still excellent for a litho button of this era.
1928 Herbert Hoover "Put Hoover On" 7/8" Pinback Button. This red, white, and blue button features a very youthful portrait of Hoover against a cream colored background. Red letters contrast the light background and the teal portrait and border with the slogan "Put Hoover On". Made by Whitehoag & Co. of Newark, New Jersey. In excellent condition; original pin and backpaper intact; light toning on the cream colored background.
1924 Classic John W. Davis 7/8" Campaign Button. Davis is one of the toughest candidates in buttons, and this is an especially popular variety as there is an exact mate for his opponent, Coolidge. In excellent condition; light stippling effect on the dark areas of the button, but may be as made.
Theodore Roosevelt "Victory" 1 ¼" Portrait Campaign Button. An attractive and unusual design; this button features a tinted portrait of T.R. inside a gold border that is surrounded by two bunted American flags, tied together at one end by a ribbon. Above the portrait, in red, white, and gold letters is the word: "Victory". Roosevelt's immense popularity is legendary, and his campaigns are some of the best represented in button and ephemera circles. This is a clean and interesting variety, suitable for any collection. In excellent condition; original backpaper and pin intact; light dents on the face, only perceptible when held at an angle.
1944 Key Roosevelt-Truman Jugate Campaign Button. This was the only jugate design produced for this ticket. This is the 1" version and is in choice condition. 1936 Alf Landon Notification Sunflower Pinback. Measuring 2 ¾" across, this large badge has a 1 ¼" celluloid in the center that is surrounded by large felt sunflower petals. The button itself features a portrait of Landon and the words: "Alf M. Landon's Notification - Topeka, July 23, 1936." A native of Kansas, the sunflower was a perfect icon for Landon, who represented his roots at every possible juncture. In excellent condition; light soiling on the tips of the petals, otherwise pristine!
1904 Alton B. Parker Natural Color 1 ¼" Pinback Button. The 1904 election centered more on the popularity and personalities of the candidates than it did on the issues and Theodore Roosevelt won the election easily. Parker is the subject of this pinback, which features his likeness in very subtle yet bright hues. Around his portrait it reads: "For President Alton B. Parker". A border of gold, red, and white surround the piece making it stand out in stark contrast. A gorgeous example for this popular candidate. In excellent condition; beginning to show signs of early celluloid separation around the edge.
1904 Alton B. Parker - H.G. Davis 1 ¼" Jugate Pinback. This red, white, and blue jugate features the two candidates who would ultimately lose to Theodore Roosevelt with his extreme popularity and military past. The images of the two men are slightly askew from one another and between them is an unfurled American flag. The soft grey and white background nicely offsets the gold border of the portraits and the flag. In excellent condition; original backpaper and pin intact; light oxidation from metal ring on verso.
1916 Charles E. Hughes 1 ¼" Campaign Portrait Button. This handsome black and white portrait pin features Charles E. Hughes and below his portrait reads: "For President - Charles E. Hughes". An attractive and minimalist design for this tough 1916 Republican Presidential aspirant, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Charles Evans Hughes. Hughes seemed to have been elected until an unexpected win the following morning put incumbent President Democrat Woodrow Wilson in the White House for another term. In excellent condition; dark saturated colors; two pronged metal back instead of a pinback; moderate celluloid separation from 5 to 7 o'clock on the rim.
Franklin D. Roosevelt 1 ¼" Portrait Pinback Button. Presented in black and white tones, this button features a portrait of FDR in the center surrounded by a bold black border. Inside the border, in white letters, it reads: "Franklin D. Roosevelt - For President". The older and more astute look of the portrait might suggest this was issued for his third or fourth term. In excellent condition; as is common with tin litho buttons, this one has minor surface marks, which detract minimally.
1937 Franklin D. Roosevelt 1 ¼" Inauguration Pinback Button. Made for Roosevelt's inauguration in 1937, this black and white button features his portrait in the center in black and white tones. The border is white with black text that reads: "Our President - Inauguration 1937 - Washington, D.C.". In excellent condition; moderate rusting on the verso inside the face; light soiling on the surface at 3 o'clock. A nice variant from the usual campaign pieces.
1912 Woodrow Wilson 1 ¼" Pinback Campaign Button. This dark toned button features a black, white, and grey portrait of Wilson facing three-quarters right with "For President 1912 - Woodrow Wilson", around. Made by Whitehead & Hoag Co. of Newark, New Jersey. In pristine condition save for a few minor surface dents.
1904 Alton B. Parker 1 ¼" Portrait Pinback Button. Parker buttons constitute rather a collecting anomaly. He was an obscure Democratic candidate, thought of by many as a "sacrificial lamb" running for President against the unbeatable incumbent Republican Teddy Roosevelt. This example is a standard portrait variety, featuring the black and white engraving of Parker inside a Union shield which has been backed by an American flag and gold borders. A handsome representative example for this tough candidate. In excellent condition; original pin and backpaper intact.
1928 Alfred E. Smith 1 ¾" Portrait Pinback Button. This is an unusual large size portrait button for this candidate. There are several varieties of portrait buttons for Smith, but most are of the 7/8" size. This impressive and imposing example features an older portrait of Smith in the center, and "Al. Smith" below. In rich dark brown and reddish tones, it makes quite a statement and would be ideal for display. In great condition; minor scratches and scuffs on the face, barely perceptible; missing backpaper.
1888-92 Benjamin Harrison "Clean Sweep" Broom Pin. Harkening to the slogan of "A Clean Sweep," button manufacturers in the 1880s and 1890s produced a series of badges depicting photos of candidates attached to dust pans, full size brooms, and whisk brooms. Here is a small whisk broom bearing the portrait of Benjamin Harrison. With a delightful reddish patina on both sides and the original pin intact. The photo is in excellent shape as well, which is not often the case since they were on cardboard and very susceptible to tearing and wear. Approximately 1.5" long.

Height 3.75", diameter including handle is 6.5".
1904 Parker/Davis "White Elephant" Pinback. 1 1/2" celluloid pinback issued in support of Parker & Davis in 1904. The reverse shows "The Rail Splitter of the West" splitting rails as helper Stephen Douglas looks on (ever constant in his subordinate position to Lincoln!) Sullivan-DeWitt AL 1860-41. Condition is choice with lovely toning, especially on the reverse. For accuracy we must note that there is some slight soiling on the reverse.
1890 G.A.R. Encampment Badge. In 1866, Benjamin Stephenson founded an organization meant to help veterans of the Civil War (Union soldiers) deal with the effects and emotions of the war. Every year an annual Encampment was held to boost moral and give soldiers a chance to interact and have a good time. This badge comes from the 1890 Annual Encampment, held in Shamokin, Pennsylvania. The ribbon on the badge is a patriotic red, white, and blue with gilt lettering. The ribbon is braced by two brass bars, the upper one bearing six stars and an image of George Washington. Suspended from the ribbon is a white metal medal bearing the standard symbols of the organization on the front, and the image of a soldier standing in an encampment on the verso. Herbert Hoover Typed Letter Signed "Herbert Hoover", one page, 7.25" x 10.5", personal stationery, New York, New York, June 22, 1959. The ex-president, writing from a suite at New York's Waldorf Astoria Towers wishes Mrs. Clarence Wyckoff congratulations on her 84th birthday. Stimson; Secretary of the Treasury Ogden L. Mills; Secretary of War Patrick Hurley; Attorney General William D. Mitchell; Secretary of the Navy, Charles F. Adams; Secretary of the Interior Ray L. Carole Lombard Document Signed. "Carole Lombard", one page, 8.5" x 11, Los Angeles, California, April 19, 1939. This document was sent to Lombard from Myron Selznick & Company Inc, in reference to an agreement they had reached regarding Lombard's appearance as the leading female in a movie entitled "Memory of Love". The movie would change its title to: "In Name Only", and Lombard was indeed the leading female role. Lombard's sudden and tragic death at the age of 33 has made her signature very scarce and valuable to collectors. She was after all the one woman who Clark Gable loved his whole life, even after she died. This item offers an excellent opportunity to own a small piece of one of her roles. In very fine condition; two small areas where staples were placed in the upper edge; signature is bold and dark.
Chiang Kai-Shek Signed Photograph. Signed in Chinese, 3.75" x 6", np, nd. Chinese military leader and political figure, Chiang Kai-Shek is featured here in this handsome portrait. The commanded forces during the Northern Expedition and ultimately liberated China from the warlords in 1928. This victory over the communists left him in the role of overall leader of the Republic of China. His efforts against the Communists proved futile in the end and he and his government were forced to retreat to Taiwan from where he continued to serve as President of the Republic of China and the director of the Chinese Nationalist Party for the rest of his life. An interesting piece for collectors of the Sino-Japanese war or Asian history. In very fine condition; several small blemishes on the dark portions of the photograph above Shek's head; bears the purple stamp of the photographer on the verso "Photo by Wu Chung Yee". Comes with original letter and envelope from Shek's aide presenting the photo to a doting American fan.
Irving Berlin Typed Letter Signed "Irving", one page, 7.25" x 11", np, June 12, 1940. Written to Robert Sherwood of New York City, this letter reads: "Enclosed is my check for $500 [not included]. which [sic] I would like to contribute to your fund. I lunched with Sam Behrman today so he will tell you how I feel about the great work you are doing. If there is anything else I can do, please let me know. My best." Sherwood was, of course, one of the members of the "Algonquin Round Table" along with Dorothy Parker and Robert Benchley. He was a successful playwright and supporter of the American efforts against the Third Reich during World War II. This is likely what Berlin was writing a check for. A wonderful letter from the master of song! In very fine condition; irregular upper edge; paperclip indention on upper edge near left corner; usual folds.

Thomas Huxley Autograph Letter Signed. "T.H. Huxley", one page (partial letter), 4.25" x 6.75", np, nd. This partial letter was written by the man known as "Darwin's Bulldog", due to the fact that he viciously supported many of Darwin's ideas in debates against Richard Owen. He is also the man who coined the term many use to describe their religious beliefs or lack thereof; "agnosticism". The letter is a portion of a longer document, and it is unable to determine the content from such a short section. It is in very fine condition; usual folds are present; light overall toning; pencil notations on recto and verso; portion of the envelope has been affixed to the verso and written on by a later collector.
Duke of Wellington Autograph Letter Signed "Wellington", one page, 4.5" x 7.25", London, March 20, 1849. Arthur Wellesley was the first Duke of Wellington, and the title was passed down to members of his family thereafter. The title refers to a senior Dukedom in the area of Somerset in the United Kingdom. He was responsible for Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo, forever immortalizing his name, and not just for the tasty dish bearing the same locative. The letter is regarding an event taking place on the following day. The hand is hard to read and is somewhat indecipherable in places. In very fine condition; usual folds are present; light overall toning; transference from ink being folded for many years; small smear on the upper quadrant.

You compliment me very highly when you class me with him and Albert Beveridge in the use of the English language. I do not by any means belong there." 1761 William Hogarth "Perriwigs" Engraving. Hogarth started his career as an artist as an engraver of coats of arms and heraldic devices and later became a famous illustrator and portrait painter. He is credited with starting the movement that made the 18th century a memorable period in British art. This particular engraving shows the five levels of "perriwigs". The piece is entitled: "The five orders of Perriwgs as they were worn at the late Coronation, measured Architectonically." The five orders are labeled and drawn with extreme detail and care. The orders are: Episcopal, Old Peerian, Lexonic, Composite, and Queerinthian. Hogarth engravings are quite collectible and this one in its pristine condition and interesting content make it even more so! Framed and matted professionally to an overall size of 20" x 26". The print itself measures 11" x 14". Light overall toning, but otherwise clean and sharp!
