Andy Mouse! New Auction Record Reached for Keith Haring’s Tribute to Andy Warhol in Heritage’s $1.76 Million Prints & Multiples Auction

The April 22 event also saw strong results for Warhol, Richard Diebenkorn and Joan Mitchell

Keith Haring (1958-1990). Andy Mouse, 1986.
DALLAS, Texas (April 23, 2025) — An iconic work from an iconic series by Keith Haring hit a new auction record at $325,000 with the sale of the 1986 print Andy Mouse in Heritage's Prints & Multiples Signature® Auction April 22.

It is the highest price realized for a print from the favorite series by Haring that depicts his friend and mentor, Andy Warhol, as an unquestionably Haring-fied man-mouse, sporting Mickey Mouse's ears, red short pants, yellow sunglasses and dollar sign emblazoned on his green torso. The work came to Heritage from the distinguished Estate of James P. Riswold of Portland, Oregon. Riswold was the creative director for American advertising agency Wieden+Kennedy, best known for its work for Nike.

The auction total reached $1.76 million for its 68 lots, with an impressive 99.5% sell-through rate, and featured significant editioned works by Wayne Thiebaud, Roy Lichtenstein, Salvador Dalí, Alex Katz, Pablo Picasso and Bridget Riley among other masters of the form.

"We are thrilled with the results of April 22 event, which offered a variety of contemporary editions," says Desiree Pakravan, Heritage's Beverly Hills-based Consignment Director of Prints & Multiples. "To set a new auction record with such an iconic work by Keith Haring is an absolute thrill. It speaks not only to the enduring power of Haring's vision but also to the discerning eye of collectors who recognize the cultural and artistic significance of works like Andy Mouse. We were honored to work with the Estate of James P. Riswold and to present a sale that resonated so strongly with our audience."

Another impressive result came in for a complete screenprint portfolio by Andy Warhol himself, this one titled Truck and depicting a large freight truck zooming diagonally toward the viewer, from his series commissioned by the German Association for Road Haulage in 1985. The set of four prints realized $181,250.

Richard Diebenkorn's High Green, Version I, from 1992 and from his signature series Ocean Park, had a great day at auction — the Aquatint with etching and drypoint on paper hammered at $137,500. It came from the Estate of Matthew Healy.

Joan Mitchell's ongoing popularity with Heritage's client base was confirmed with a strong hammer price of $109,375 for her Sunflower I diptych from 1992. The Sunflowers series was the last that Joan Mitchell printed before her death in 1992 and is highly representational of Mitchell's body of work.

"The success of this auction affirms the strength and vitality of the market for Modern and Contemporary editions," says Pakravan. "It's been incredibly gratifying to see collectors respond so passionately to the caliber and variety of works on offer. It was a remarkable day for both seasoned and new collectors alike."
