An Empire on Parade: Art and Architecture of the Texas Centennial Exposition to be Discussed March 14

Tejas Warrior - Fair Park Art Deco

DALLAS, Texas (February 28, 2017) — Dallas-based Heritage Auctions recently launched a new Art & Design Speaker Series and the second installment will be held March 14, at the Dallas Design District Showroom, 1518 Slocum Street. Entitled An Empire on Parade: Art and Architecture of the Texas Centennial Exposition the event will feature award-winning Art Deco authors Jim Parsons and David Bush speaking about art and architecture of Fair Park — the public spaces, buildings, sculptures and murals that were designed for the 1936 exposition. The authors will bring the Centennial Exposition to life in their illustrated lecture, discussing Fair Park's distinctive buildings and artwork and the stories behind their design.

"Creating the Art Deco art and architecture of Fair Park for the 1936 Texas Centennial Exposition was a monumental task in the depths of the Great Depression — in fact, the exposition's promoters coined a word, 'Texanic,' to describe its scope," said Jim Parsons. "Today, Fair Park houses one of the world's largest collections of Art Deco buildings, and it is the only surviving fairgrounds from the golden age of world's fairs."

A native of Baytown, Texas, Jim Parsons, puts a passion for the state's history and architecture to work as director of special projects and walking tours chairman for Preservation Houston who has also written about and photographed cities across the United States. David Bush was born and raised in New Orleans, where he developed his lifelong interest in historic architecture. Jim and David are co-authors of three award-winning books about Art Deco architecture in Texas: Houston Deco, Hill Country Deco and Fair Park Deco. Their fourth book, Dallas-Fort Worth Deco, is due for a late summer release by TCU Press of Fort Worth.

"Our goal with the speaker series is to engage the North Texas design community with thoughtful and informative presentations relating to design trends and key influencers. The March event featuring award-winning authors and Art Deco experts Jim Parsons and David Bush will further elevate the Speaker Series as a must-attend event for North Texas designers and collectors," said Ed Beardsley, Vice President of Heritage Auctions.

The Art & Design Speaker Series is designed to entertain and inform North Texas designers and art collectors about new design trends, discuss developments in the art community and introduce clients to interesting art and designer personalities. The March 14 event which will begin at 6 p.m. will also highlight the upcoming March 17-19 Through the Modernist Lens: A Distinctive Hollywood Collection of Art Deco and 20th Century Art auction. A book signing will follow the presentation and Q&A session.

The inaugural event of 2017 featured nationally known interior designer John Phifer Marrs speaking about Clients with a Dream: Creating Beautiful Interiors for Collectors in February and was a resounding success.
