Heritage to Auction Rare and Original "Frankenstein" Movie PosterDALLAS, TEXAS: Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers, the world's largest auctioneer of collectibles, announced today that it will offer an extremely rare, original 1931 "Frankenstein" One Sheet movie poster in their first Movie Poster Signature auction of 2004. Heritage expects this copy to realize at least $200,000, and perhaps significantly more.
Universal's classic "Frankenstein" is considered the greatest horror film of all time. This 70-year-old gothic horror film was produced for a sum of $291,000 at the height of the depression, and made a star of a forty-four year old Boris Karloff and Universal Studios some twelve million dollars richer. The film became an almost instant classic of a new genre--the horror movie--and is viewed today as one of the true classics of world cinema.
This poster, only the fifth copy known to have survived, is a gorgeous "stone-lithograph" image and one of the most sought movie posters of any era. "Who doesn't remember as a child seeing Karloff as the monster in glorious black and white on television?" said Heritage's movie poster expert, Grey Smith. "The image of Karloff, as seen on this poster, with his flat head and bolts coming out of the neck, was the first such image that any audience laid eyes on. And it would become one of the most recognizable and iconographic images of a monster in the twentieth century. That is what makes this the holy grail of the vintage poster hobby. There isn't a collector in the field who hasn't dreamed of finding or owning this poster. And only four other copies are known to exist, all locked in collections that will not see the light of day, I suspect, for many a year. A similar poster is the cornerstone of two of the very best world-class collections", he added, "and I doubt there will be another coming available soon."
Horror and Science Fiction movie posters are among the most in-demand pieces in the hobby as indicated by the prices fetched in auction. The last copy of the "Frankenstein" poster to sell at auction was in 1993, and sold for a record price at that time of $198,000.
"We have been very encouraged by the growth in our movie poster auction category and with the sale of the "Babe Comes Home" poster in our last auction. We suspect that with this great and rare poster, "Frankenstein", we will set a new record," said Heritage's co-chairman Jim Halperin. Heritage sold a One Sheet poster to "Babe Comes Home" starring baseball great Babe Ruth for $138,000. in their November Signature sale.
Space is still available in Heritage's next auction, where you could actually sell your posters alongside the Frankenstein one sheet. Prospective movie poster consignors, please call Grey Smith at 214-252-4367 or email GreySm@HeritageGalleries.com
