Heritage to Auction Rare Babe Ruth Movie PosterHigher quality photography available upon request
DALLAS, TEXAS: At the Wizard World Texas popular culture convention in Arlington (near Dallas) November 19-23, Heritage Galleries will offer a very rare and significant piece of sports memorabilia and Americana, an original one-sheet movie poster for "The Babe Comes Home" starring Babe Ruth.
Heritage expects the poster to realize over $100,000, perhaps significantly more.
This is the first time the poster has ever come onto the auction block," explained Grey Smith, Movie Poster Consultant for Heritage Galleries, "and only the second copy of this poster known to exist. The poster was released as advertising for a film that starred the baseball immortal Babe Ruth, in one of only two feature length starring roles he made during his heyday." This 64-minute film was made in 1927, the year the "Sultan of Swat" hit 60 home runs during a 154-game stretch. The record stood until 1961, when it was finally broken by Roger Maris. The superb stone-lithograph image, captures "the Babe" with his glove in the air catching a fly ball in his official team position as pitcher.
Smith continued, "This rare and superb work of art captures the image of baseball in its Golden Age, and also the spectacular Golden Age of movie posters, when posters were the movie studio's main advertising tool. They were produced using magnificent artwork in combination with superior printing techniques, and this one is a classic!"
"This very rare and historic piece is sure to capture not only the attention of the movie poster enthusiast but also of sports memorabilia, and baseball collectors," explained Jim Halperin, Co-Chairman of Heritage Galleries. The Texas based auction house has set world records with comic books, comic art, movie posters and illustration art. Heritage plans to launch sports memorabilia auctions in 2004.
