Press Release - February 25, 2004

Heritage to Offer Additional Rarities from the Dr. Robert Wharton Collection at Portland ANA

Dallas, TX: Heritage Numismatic Auctions will be offering additional highlights from Dr. Robert Wharton's collection at their official auction of the 2004 Portland ANA National Money Show, taking place March 25-27. The Portland ANA marks Heritage's 31st selection as the official auctioneer of the American Numismatic Association, an unsurpassed record of service to the numismatic community. Heritage has also been selected as the official auctioneer of the Pittsburgh ANA taking place this summer. The Portland Signature Sale contains 2,000 diverse lots from the collections of more than 140 consignors.

Part Two of the collection consigned by Dr. Robert H. Wharton, Jr. contains an especially significant selection of Standing Liberty Quarters (including many Gems and Full Head specimens). His 1927-S example, certified by PCGS as MS66, is one of the finest surviving of the minimal 396,000 pieces minted in San Francisco that year. This is the premier rarity among regular issue Standing Liberty quarters, rarer even than the 1916 (as the 1916s were more often saved). Only a few dozen Mint State coins survive from the 1927-S emission, and at the MS66 level, it is one of the foremost condition rarities in all of 20th century U.S. numismatics. The surfaces on this piece sparkle with bright mint luster and, while not technically a "Full Head" coin, there are two distinct sprigs in Liberty's hair and the remainder of the head is complete except for the area around the ear. The PCGS Population Report shows 27 entries in MS66, with only 4 finer.

Below are some of Dr. Wharton's Standing Liberty Quarter highlights:
