Heritage to Offer Jack R. Canniff's Washington Quarters, #1 PCGS Registry Set, Current Finest
Dallas, Texas: Heritage Numismatic Auctions, Inc. is pleased to announce that the Jack R. Canniff Collection of Washington Quarters, the #1 PCGS Registry Set (Current Finest with Varieties), will anchor its June 2004 Long Beach Signature Auction. The set is notable since Mr. Canniff pursued coins that were bright white and original; coins that look as they did when they left the mint as especially prized by Washington collectors.
"The Washington Quarter," said Heritage President Greg Rohan, "was designed by John Flanagan, and was first issued in 1932 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of George Washington's birth. In addition to the challenge of locating high-grade examples of the rare 1932-D and 1932-S issues, there are several 'tough' varieties, including the 1934 Doubled Die, the 1943-S Doubled Die, the 1950-S/D, and the 1950-D/S, among others. Registry collectors have their work cut out for them."
Jack R. Canniff inherited the 'collecting bug' from his coin-collecting father: "Dad greatly enjoyed old coins, although he wasn't ever what I would call serious about numismatics. Around the age of ten, I started getting serious about the pursuit of rare coins, although I also never lost his sense of enjoyment." Mr. Canniff started collected any and all nice coins. In the mid-eighties, his general interest in Washington Quarters became a fixation; he became so interested that he sold off everything else to pursue the single series. He has been chasing the whitest coins he could find for more than a decade, with the specific search for Registry coins taking more than six years of searching to assemble.
"Jack Canniff's Quarters," noted Heritage Consignment Director Mike Sadler, "continue Heritage's long tradition of offering the finest Registry coins at auction. At FUN 2004 we offered Patrick J. Mullen's #1 All-Time PCGS Registry Collection of Washington Quarters with Varieties, and now we are selling Jack R. Canniff's #1 Current Finest set. The popularity of the Washington Quarter series has just exploded since the first Statehood quarters were minted in 1999."
"In past years," continued Sadler, "Heritage has offered dozens of leading PCGS Registry sets, but the pace has been picking up since FUN. During 2004 alone, we have auctioned: The Richard PCGS Registry Collections of Mint State & Proof Indian Cents (both ranked as #3 Current Finest and #4 All-Time Finest); The #2 Timely Collection of Mint State Quarter Eagles (#2 Current Finest and #6 All-Time Finest); John Troy's #1 PCGS Registry Collection of Proof Lincoln Cents (#1 Basic Set, Proof 1959-Present); and, of course, my Registry Set of Lincoln Cents (#8 All-Time and #6 Current Basic Set, Circulation Strikes 1909-1958).
