Explorers, Reporters, and Inventors: Creating an Artistic Vision of the American West

The idea of the American West has long been a fascinating subject for American artists. Beginning in the 1830s, artists such as George Catlin, Karl Bodmer, and Alfred Jacob Miller, followed the trails blazed by Lewis and Clark and ventured into an unknown land of exotic people, animals, and breathtaking vistas. Those pioneers set the stage for succeeding generations of artists who have found in the American West ample inspiration for their artistic visions. For these artists, the West is both a geographic location and a mythic arena. It has a literal history complete with adventure, drama, and heartbreak along with an idealized version that has formed the basis for countless artistic impressions along with books, movies, and television programs.

Artists have interpreted the many facets of the West, both the real and the ideal, for over a century and a half, and continue to do so in a wide variety of styles and media today. Much of what we know about the American West, its history and its present, comes to us through the eyes of the artists who have found in its land, people, and wildlife, their own personal creative vision.
