The British Monarchs Collection

The Royal Mint, one of the oldest continuously operating mints in the world, has struck coins for every British monarch for the last millennium, creating some of the most iconic coins in the history of numismatics. Begun in 2022, the Royal Mint has celebrated this legacy with a unique series of coins honoring the Royal Houses and their unique numismatic portraiture. Heritage Auctions, as an official distributor of the Royal Mint, is able to offer the 1oz gold coins in this modern numismatic series exclusively to our clients.

The British Monarchs Collection will be a multi-year project that highlights coins of every ruler from the Houses of the Tudors, Stuarts, Hanoverians, and Saxe-Coburg and Gotha & Windsor, with 21 different issues in total. Using the highest quality example available from the collection of The Royal Mint Museum as a basis for the design, each coin in the series will reflect the best contemporary workmanship for that monarch's coins as they were originally struck, reworked to modern standards. The series will allow one to trace the evolution of British minting techniques and artistic style over the last half millennium, from the hammered coinage of Henry VII in the 15th Century to where we are today with the coins of Queen Elizabeth II, struck with the most cutting-edge technology.

George II (1727-1760)

The Royal Mint has chosen George II, who reigned the kingdom of Great Britain during the War of Jenkins' Ear, the Seven Years' War, and the last Jacobite Rebellion, as the eighth ruler featured in the British Monarch collection. He ruled from 1727 until his death in 1760, leaving a legacy as a great patron: he famously donated the royal library to the British Museum, signed the charter for what would become Columbia University, and established the Georg August University of Göttingen.

Beginning in the second year of the British Monarchs Collection, the mintage figures have been substantially reduced, to less than half of what they were in prior years, so supplies will not last long!

Charles II (1660-1685)

For the seventh release from the British Monarchs Collection, the Royal Mint has chosen Charles II, a ruler who enjoyed popular support throughout his reign as King of England, Scotland, and Ireland. Charles ascended the throne more than a decade after his father's execution, during a contentious period for the English Commonwealth, and ruled until his death in 1685. Although remembered for his friendliness rather than his skill as a statesman, Charles notably restored the Church of England and dissolved English Parliament during his short rule.

Charles I (1625-1649)

The sixth coin of the Royal Mint's British Monarch Collection stars an equestrian portrait of Charles I. As the second son of James VI, King of Scotland, Charles became heir apparent to the rule of England, Scotland, and Ireland upon the death of his older brother Henry Frederick in 1612. Charles' reign worsened contention between the monarchy and parliament, likely due to his perceived Catholic sympathies and his insistence in his divine right to rule, and Charles was executed following his capture during the English Civil War.
