Rare Hermès Designs Lead Heritage’s $3.08 Million Spring Luxury Accessories Auction
| From the coveted Himalaya Birkin to the elusive So Black Kelly, iconic handbags took the spotlight in April 23 event, underscoring continued demand for exquisite, limited-edition designs DOWNLOAD DIGITAL PRESS KIT “We were thrilled by the response to this auction,” says Diane D’Amato, Heritage’s Director of Luxury Accessories, Private Sales & The Boutique. “The depth of bidding and the strength of the results reflect the enduring appeal of Hermès and other legendary houses, as well as the continued demand for rare, beautifully crafted pieces at the highest levels of the market.” Leading the auction was the highly sought-after Hermès 30cm Matte White Himalaya Niloticus Crocodile Birkin, which realized $87,500. The bag is revered for its rarity and the meticulous hand-dyeing process that produces its signature ombre coloration. A masterwork of craftsmanship, the exquisite creation is fashioned from the hide of the Niloticus crocodile, whose scales are large and symmetrical, ensuring meticulous uniformity. Another top lot was the Hermès Matte Black Porosus Crocodile & Ostrich Feather Folie Kelly Elan, which sold for $62,500. The Kelly Elan Folie is a reimagination of the classic Kelly Elan silhouette embellished with ostrich feather detailing. The auction’s Hermès Limited Edition Argent Sterling Silver Kellymorphose Sac Bijou Chaine Bag also grabbed bidders’ attention. The stunning work of haute bijouterie, which realized $61,250, transforms the iconic Kelly silhouette into a wearable sculpture. The piece is not only ethereal jewelry, but also a fully realized miniature Kelly handcrafted entirely of sterling silver, suspended from a fine chain. Another standout offering was the Hermès Limited Edition 35cm So Black Box Calf Kelly Retourne Bag, which brought $40,000 in Thursday’s auction. Designed by Jean Paul Gaultier for his final runway show and widely regarded as one of the most important and elusive handbags ever created, the bag is considered Gaultier’s most significant contribution to Hermès. The Holy Grail of luxury handbags, the So Black collection rivals the Himalaya, not only in terms of collectability and scarcity, but in its understated elegance and legendary status. The auction also featured an impressive selection of Hermès Mini Kellys in exotic skins and rare finishes. Among the Mini Kellys that performed particularly well were versions in Matte Vert D’eau Alligator ($41,250), Shiny Braise Alligator ($40,000), Matte Bougainvillier Alligator ($37,500), studded Black Box Calf Leather ($35,000), Metallic Argent Chevre Chamkilight Leather ($33,750) and Gold Epsom Leather ($27,500). Another highlight was the Chanel Hammered Gold Bullion Bar Minaudière, which realized $18,750. The extremely rare minaudière was featured in Chanel’s Spring 2006 Ready-to-Wear show, a collection titled “Coco Meets James Dean.” The auction had a few surprises as well, including the Christian Dior Black & White Newspaper Printed Leather Mini Saddle Bag that shot past its pre-auction estimate to achieve $11,562. Another surprise result: the Hermès 27cm Parchemin Ostrich Bolide Bag that also exceeded expectations, realizing $18,750. “What stood out most in this auction was how strongly collectors responded to true rarity and exceptional design,” D’Amato says. “From the Himalaya Birkin to the So Black Kelly, these are pieces that transcend fashion. They represent artistry, innovation and a level of craftsmanship that continues to captivate collectors worldwide.” Other highlights included: • Hermès 30cm Shiny Bleu Electrique Niloticus Crocodile Birkin Bag ($43,750) • Hermès 25cm Matte Vert D’eau Alligator Birkin Bag ($42,500) • Hermès Limited Edition 35cm Black Evergrain Leather Anate Fringe Birkin Sellier ($35,000) • Hermès 25cm Matte Graphite Niloticus Crocodile Birkin Bag ($32,500) • Hermès 30cm Matte Graphite Niloticus Crocodile Birkin Bag ($30,000) • Hermès 18cm Ombre Salvator Lizard Mini Constance Bag ($30,000) • Hermès 35cm Bleu Marine Courchevel Leather Birkin Bag, Inscribed and Signed Twice by Jane Birkin ($27,500) • Hermès 30cm Shiny Cocoan Niloticus Crocodile Birkin Bag ($27,500) • Hermès 25cm Graphite Madame Leather Kelly Sellier Bag ($27,500) Go here for the full results of Heritage’s April 23 Spring Luxury Accessories Signature® Auction.
